Nicole:

This semester in our English course has been helpful in several different ways. This class has personally benefited me by helping me understand to look deeper than the surface. I’ve realized that not everything is meant to be read so literal. As a direct person I have a habit of reading things for what they are and not for what they really could mean or symbolize. I feel that my strength is participating in the oral discussions and being able to correlate others perceptions with the reading. Another strength I realized I have is my free writing. I’m good at developing different ideas and different meanings to the readings. I do feel I could have done better on the essay if I was to pay closer attention to tiny details throughout my essay. So far I am keeping up with the posts and the reading so I am expecting and hoping for a  good grade.

Maria:

Being a Finance major, this English course definitely allows me to channel my creative and free thinking side. The stories we read for this course allow me to think critically and find the deeper meaning of the text. One strength I developed is writing clear and concise paragraphs. The structure that the professor has us write in, has definitely helped me articulate my thought in a way that the reader will understand. The group work is another component of the class that I enjoy as it motivates the group to work well as a team and support one another through responses and understanding texts. I hope to continue to strengthen my written communication skills as that is one skill I believe I need to work on. The quizzes, exams and posts definitely motivate me to not only do the readings but read and simultaneously analyze the meaning of the text. I am looking forward to the oral essay as it is definitely more creative and different from all of the speeches and presentations I have made for my other Finance courses.

Tara:

This semester I have found this English course to be productive in many aspects. Free writing during class has been helpful in remembering all ideas brought up in class. I have also learned to better construct a clear paragraph in order to make my point clearer to the reader. Lastly I’ve worked on reading things and trying to understand the underlying meaning within it. Prior to this course I never would analyze readings so thoroughly and try to understand multiple perspectives. I have found this enjoyable because I often hear thoughts that I never noticed during the reading. I think because of reading quizzes and posts every week; I have kept up with the readings which was very helpful for the exam and essay. I think I can work on my communication skills during large group discussions. As a corporate communications major I am not used to abstract thinking, however I think doing so can be helpful in my career and i’d like to improve on that.

    RESPONSES TO EACHOTHER:

    Nicole :

Maria, as a group member i have realized that you do well at writing clear thought out paragraphs and responses. You use a lot of evidence from the readings to support your arguments and opinions when it’s time to do our discussions. One thing i think would benefit you is participating more in class. I know you have great ideas and observations that the rest of the class would also enjoy. Tara, being that we previously were in a group together in a different class I know you’re so smart and full of ideas. You’re very dedicated to the readings and also do well in the responses we participate in every week. I would also like to see you participate more in class so our classmates can hear what great perspectives you have of the readings.

    Maria:

Nicole, I also have the habit of reading and then interpreting the text for the literal meaning rather than thinking about the deeper concept the author is trying to convey. I think this course is definitely helping us delve deeper into the text and understand it more critically. Your active participation in class and ability to bring new thoughts to the discuss is great. I think a great way to improve your essay writing is to create a short outline before you begin writing your essay; I found this helpful for myself to brainstorm and plan out what I want my essay to sound like. Tara, You definitely know how to convey your thoughts during the weekly posts and I think you are good at finding the deeper meaning of the text. I also look forward to working together during the oral essay. Since you are a communications major I am sure you will be able to bring a lot to our group. Participating more in class will definitely allow you to present your ideas verbally.

    Tara:

Nicole, I think I speak for the group when I say we have learned to interpret texts differently. I think this is a good skill to develop especially as communication majors. You participate actively in class, and always have great ideas. Improving your essays can be done by printing a draft of your paper and proof reading that way. I always find small errors easily when i’m reading it on paper rather than on my computer. Also as Maria stated having a peer read your paper is very helpful too; I’d be happy to do that for you whenever you need. Maria, you always construct clear thoughts for our weekly group work and I often learn different perspectives from your posts. I think the posts will help you improve your written communications skills that you’d like to work on. I look forward to working together on the oral project. Hopefully as a finance major and a communications major we can conjoin different ideas and creativity and come up with something cool to present.
