1. It may seem as if men have more power when they objectify women, but the power of femininity is, ultimately, the greater force that empowers women over men.
2. Although most women were held under the dominance of men in 17th century, such as Dorine, there was a rising number of women, such as Mariane and Elmire, who spoke up as they strived for justice.

Personally, I like the first thesis than the second one. I think that they way you stated it you can actually use more than one text in your paper. It is very creative that you will be able to use more than one text if that is possible. I can see that thesis being used with Tartuffe and the Du Tenth story. Where at the end both women had some sort of power over the man to go and do something. I feel like for the second one it might be harder to find good quotes to use but it is not a bad thesis. I just like the first one a little bit more.

I really like both thesis ideas! I just want to make one point that I think that to say that women ultimately are more powerful than men, is sort of a subjective statement rather than an objective one. While I do agree that women are powerful and great, I believe men are too. If you want to be more specific and say, “In the play it is apparent that the men in society objectified women and held the upper hand in the household, however throughout the play there are many instances where the women are powerful and courageous.” Of course you don’t have to use my words, but I think that it becomes more about the play and less of a personal opinion. Again, great thesis idea!

Suggestion: The name of the play needs to be mentioned in the thesis.
For thesis #1: You might want to be less general and subjective. However if you do choose to keep this thesis you should include in the thesis examples of how the play Tartuffe showed that men objectify women AND how the play demonstrated that ultimately women overpower men.
For theses #2: I might want to say that Dorine was not held under dominance of men. She was the maid. Which indicates she is doing it for economical reasons, not for being a women. Also want to add that she actually speaks out against men way more and far earlier than Elmire and Mariane.

For the 2nd thesis, I actually meant to write “Although most women were held under the dominance of men in 17th century, such as Mariane, there was a rising number of women, such as Dorine and Elmire, who spoke up as they strived for justice.” I switched the names.
Thank you for the feedbacks!

Rose,
I like both of your thesis statements, but I think your first is really intriguing. I would like to see it honed, more specifically, though. In other words, what do you mean by objectification and what do you mean by femininity? Also, be sure to go on to state (even though it’s implied) what the authors’ intent was for both these issues.
