Assignment 4

1- Molière’s use of satire in Tartuffe was not only a way to reveal discontent for religious hypocrisy in his play, but also provided a revelation of it in the grander scheme of society at the time.

2- Perfection in men of the cloth can be blinding, as people may not see their true nature.  Tartuffe’s true nature as a religious hypocrite is finally revealed, leaving him to deal with the consequences, which justifies the ending of Molière’s play.

Hello! Both your thesis statements are great. I just have a query about the second one because it is a bit unclear to me.I don’t understand how the revelation of Tartuffe’s true nature would justify the ending. Maybe you can include a particular detail in your statement to narrow the focus more. Your thesis is very interesting and would make for a great read!

    Alyshia,
The first statement is rather broad, because your last phrase could refer to so many things. It’s better to just stay close to the text, but then you would need to decide upon which characters (not more than two) that you’ll be using.
Your second statement is clearer, but might be a bit too obvious. If you deal with Tartuffe’s hypocrisy, you would also want to discuss how that’s impacting a specific issue or character in the play.
