I agree on both of your thesis statements. I believe you should focus more on your first thesis statement since there is a lot of evidence in the text that you can use to support your thesis statement.

Yes, they would both work, I think, although the second is somewhat general. Also, I’m not sure what, exactly, you would discuss in the second one, sense her second chance only comes at the end, unless you want to say that her experiences actually lead her to this second chance (which is an interesting idea).
