- In short story Aura, author Carlos Fuentes uses second person in order to strengthen the theme of darkness as concealing and light as illuminating.
- In Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis,” main character Gregor transforms as he becomes a bug, as he is referred to for the first time as an “it,” and as he dies, although ultimately, he does not experience a true change of character.
- Poems 449 and 465, both by Emily Dickinson, share the common theme of death, which is developed through dialogue in the former, imagery in the latter, and metrical patterns in both.

The first thesis, I feel like you have to develop it more. what does darkness and light stand for? However, I do like the last two, specifically the Kafka one. I like the idea that Gregor never really changes himself only his appearance. That could be a great essay. The last one, I think is more concise then the rest. it states clearly, what the qualities the poems possess that are similar, and could easily be defended in an essay.

Milly, nice work!
I think they would all work, but they all need some tweaking. In the first, as Erica noted, you would need to specify what the dark is concealing and the light is revealing. If you do that in the thesis statement, I think it could be quite interesting. The second is more specific, but needs to be reworked. As it is, your ideas are rather scattered until the last part of your statement. Here, too, you would need to specify what kind of change. In the third, you need to be more specific as to what Dickinson is actually saying about death, so think carefully about that.
