I agree with you when you said the women becomes tolerant and obeys the men in the beginning. she has to pretend that she is happy but in reality she is not. This reminded of the “Mistress of a Domain Lord”. The women over time became disgusted with the lord and decided not to say anything about her unhappiness. She becomes compliant and unsatisfied with her situation. I see where your coming from when you say she becomes compliant. The women didn’t like the monk at first. It was clear and obvious but she continued the relationship for all the wrong reasons.
