Thesis Statements for Essay #2

  1. Throughout the story “Metamorphosis” the theme of alienation is presented when Gregor’s family alienates him once he turns into a bug, which ultimately leads to his tragic death.
  2. In Kafka’s “Metamorphosis,” Gregor displays loyalty to his family, however when he turns into a bug, the limits of family loyalty are questionable, which ultimately leads to a tragic ending.
  3. In Kafka’s “Metamorphosis,” symbolism is used when Gregor is exemplified as a cockroach; the most hated bug, which creates a situation where his family finds it impossible to accept him, which ultimately leads to his tragic death.

    Chaya,

Nicely done! I think your third option is your most effective, as it is not only your most specific, but it also lends itself to a deeper exploration, I think. I say this because in this option, you will need to address the symbolism of the cockroach, and I encourage you to think carefully about this symbol, so that you are not only referring to attributes that immediately come to mind, but more subtle characteristics as well. It is in these more subtle characteristics (as well as the more obvious ones, of course) I think, that you’ll find the true Gregor! To do this (just a suggestion) start by making a list of characteristics (for yourself, as you don’t want a list in your essay) and then go from there.

    10/10

Great job! I think number 2 and 3 are the most effective! In number 2 it is certainly true that Gregor’s family’s loyalty is questionable and he becomes alienated. My only concern with this option is that you won’t be able to write lengthy responses in detail with this one. With option three you will be able to explore the symbolism of his character as he is the “cockroach, ” here you can explore how these attributes led his family to alienate him even more than he was prior to this metamorphosis. He always felt as if he was an outsider and through his transformation more of those thoughts and feelings were able to be seen.

These are great thesis statements. I would have to agree that 2 and 3 are the most effective. The first one is good but very simple and I think that you can get more specific. In number 2, I definitely agree Gregor was very loyal to his family and he eventually feels isolated. I don’t think this one is specific enough though. You will have a very difficult time writing 4-5 pages. In number 3, by mentioning his transformation more specifically this allows to you to discuss more on what the causes and effects of this. Overall good job. Keep up the good work.

All three of these thesis statements are great but I do prefer thesis statement 3 over all the other ones. The cockroach was definitely a symbol of a hated bug and how it is seen as a rejection from society. The cockroach is not something that is liked and it shows how society viewed people who were different. Cockroaches are stepped on and cast aside and if someone sees it, they usually want to kill it or avoid it. I think that writing 4-5 pages on the symbolism behind the cockroach and society’s views on it aren’t going to be too difficult.
