Assignment 12

  1. In Carlos Fuentes’s work, “Aura”, the use of a second person narrative not only facilitates the reader’s ability to escape reality with the characters, but, this choice also strengthens the theme of beauty in Fuentes’s fantasy world.
  2. Although in “Because I could not stop for Death” and “I heard a Fly buzz-when I died” Emily Dickinson uses both similar and different strategies to devleop a theme of mortality, the final intepretation of mortality in each piece is drastically different.
  3. In Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis”, Gregor’s transformation to that of an insect is a symbolic depiction of his transformation internally, but more importantly, it is significant of a true metamorphosis.

All three of your theses seem effective but I like your first thesis the most. Felipe escapes reality as he dwells in a mysterious world, in which he encounters two woman. Your first thesis is very specific and I think that by focusing on the use of the second person to portray the transition from reality to fantasy and its effect on the theme of beauty in the fantasy world will make a great argument. You effectively narrowed down Carlos Fuentes’ “Aura” by choosing one theme: beauty. When you write your essay, you should examine Aura’s beauty such as when Felipe first meets Aura and is mesmerized by her green eyes. You should also focus on Consuelo’s beauty as she tries to recapture her youth.

Joshua, a nice selection of choices!
I think any of these would work, but as the first option is rather abstract (although the idea of how the second person affects the beauty of the fantasy world is intriguing) it might be the most difficult one to keep focused. The second one is perhaps your most specific, but in the thesis, you should go ahead and say what is essentially different about the two. If you choose the third option, you also need to state, concisely, what that true metamorphosis actually is (and I assume you are referring to Gregor’s internal/psychological state).
