The poem , Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger, and Life of a Sensuous Woman have many similarities between their main characters. Both of these women are prostitutes who want to have love in their lives. The old woman from Life of a Sensuous Woman wanted to feel loved than rather having a man be physically attracted to her. Du Tenth also shared the same views, she would give up being a prostitute to be with the love of her life. “Futhermore, when she noticed how sincere and earnest young master Li was toward her, she was very inclined to throw in her lot with him,” (Menglog,499). Sadly, both of these women never had their expectation of love given to them. They both faced heartbreak by the end of their story. The old women realized she slept with too many men in her life and tried to commit suicide. Du Tenth faced heartbreak when the love of her life, Master Li, sold her for money. ” Tenth removed her hands from him and laughed coldly, saying The man who devised this plan is truly a great hero. The fortune of the thousand taels will enable yo to restore your position in your family, ” (Menglog, 514). These two women share many similarities during their life as a prostitute.

I agree that both of these women both faced heartbreak at the end of the story. I thought Du Tenth’s reaction to Li Jia’s plan to sell her for money was very interesting and the quote you used really stuck out to me. At first, when she said that the man who devised this plan was a great hero, I thought she was speaking sarcastically. I thought this at first because her word choice made Li Jia seem like a fool for actually believing that Sun Fu was trying to help him, when he was clearly manipulating him to own Du Tenth. However, after reading the quote a second time in your blog, I realize that she may actually consider Sun Fu a hero, in a way, because he saved her from making a huge mistake, even though it devastated her. Sun Fu revealed that Li Jia cannot be trusted, and this saved her from a long life of betrayal.

Yes, the idea of love is central to both women, and this is a focus that could be explored much more deeply in an essay, if you like. For these short responses, work to look more closely at the text, so that the quotations you choose not only reflect your assertions, but deepen the complexity of the topic.
