- Money does not buy happiness. In Feng Menglong “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger,” the character Du Tenth has her love betrayed and even though she still has a great amount of savings in her “jewel box,” she is so badly hurt and unhappy she throws it all away as well as her own life.
- In Tartuffe, Moliere the play writer pokes fun at the idea all religious people are saints by creating a story that portraits a religious man taking advantage of a family who have never known of a religious man being corrupt.

I really like both of your ideas. The play on of words in your first thesis is very creative, but I think it could be a bit more guided. When I first read it, it sounded more of a topic sentence for one of your paragraphs. Maybe you could possibly say the reason behind the author giving her the role of being the one to “throw it away”. The second one is good as well but you could explain why Moliere does that. The thesis would shine through if you gave the reader a small hint of what his intentions are for doing such a thing. Both thesis’ are original and creative, but just a little tweaking would make them that much better. Great start.

I also like both of your ideas. I like the simplicity in the first thesis by the use of a simple but strong first sentence then the expansion with the following sentence. I especially like your use in saying that she throws both her life and jewel box away. As for the second thesis, I like as well, but my suggestion would be to remove the word all from all religious people. I think all is too much of a broad and generalized statement whereas in saying some it maybe more easier to prove. Food for thought.

I really like both of your ideas. I like how you included a well-known phrase that anybody can relate to (“Money does not buy happiness”) into a thesis statement and related it to Du Tenth’s situation. By saying she throws away her jewel box and her life you create a very dramatic point that you can build upon or lead up to in your essay. I am writing about a similar topic in your second thesis and I really liked how you incorporated pre-existing thoughts about religious people into your thesis statement.

Richard,
Both statements include valid comments, but both are missing an important element, the interpretive part, why the authors are focusing on these issues. When you include this in the thesis statement, this will encourage a deeper discussion overall.
