Assignment 4

The role of women in Saikaku’s, from Life of a Sensuous Woman, is to become the ideal woman who can capture the heart of the aristocratic levels, always have a man by her side, accept the blames of the deteriorating health of men, and to stay away from the public’s eyes when they’re told.

The tensions between value systems in “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger,” are held upon the occupation of the family. Li Jia had an aristocratic image from his family, which made him a studious scholar; on the other hand, Du Tenth had a courtesan image from her family, which made her a gold digger.

I like both of your thesis statements. It make sense and people can go against it.

These are two elaborative, and thorough thesis statements. I think using either or will be a major advantage to your paper. I find that the the second one can use a little more work. I think you state a fact based on the reading. So basically all you would have to do is build on it with something that may be more arguementative. Whichever is of your choosing, will be a start to a good paper.

In your second one, it would be difficult to defend, I think, Du Tenth as a gold digger (although perhaps that’s not what you would actually discuss?). Your second one is more focused, I think, but try to get away from the “three paragraph structure.” Our essays are too long for three paragraphs, so if you set up three sections in your thesis, you may get into some trouble there.
