I honestly prefer the second thesis statement over the first one. I feel like it is more focused, in that you are specifically going to explain how money centered mentality was the reason why Du Tenth and Ji relationship feel. With the first one though, I think you can tweak it a bit to make it a great topic to talk about it. I think the idea of explaining how it money and power played and influential role both Du Tenth and Ji’s surrounding society and their personal relationship took a toll because of that could be interesting. Instead of writing,

Feng Menglong’s narrative, “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger” shows money and power playing an influential role in society and romantic relationships, in this narrative it is fatal and is the breaking of a love story.

    maybe you could write

Feng Menglong’s narrative, “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger” shows how money and power plays an influential role in both Du Tenth’s and Ji Lia ‘s society, and eventually affecting their personal romantic relationship.

I like both thesis statements but I do prefer the second one because it is centered around the theme of money but I would have probably mentioned which character was more obsessed with money and that would of obviously been Li Jia. I would of made the point that Li Jia put a greater emphasis on money than Du Tenth did and that it was Li Jia’s money-centered mentality that led to the downfall of their relationship because Du Tenth wasn’t too concerned with money and was more focused on love, affection, and sincerity. But nonetheless, good job!

    Krystal,

I think your second is somewhat more specific, so I would probably go with that one. You could also go on to say, even in your thesis, how (briefly) money/power (and you should choose one, I think) affects the relationship.
