- Money influences society in more ways than we care to admit, even in 16th century China. Money can be a way to demonstrate the importance of a relationship between people. It can also be a way to dehumanize a person, by literally placing a price on their life. In Feng Menglong’s short story, “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger”, is genuine representation of how two individuals personal values of money and/or love conflict, redefining their relationship.
- Values are intangible things that are important to us, and ultimately influence our decision-making. Each person has a different set of values, morals, and ethics, which results in individually making different choice. However, in order to maintain a stable relationship, most people search for those whose value system is on par with their own. For the main characters in Feng Menglong’s short story, “Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger”, they struggled with aligning their values of money or love, therefore creating a rift within then their relationship. This short story remains as an authentic example of the how clashing of personal value system can be the primary downfall in relationships.

I can see you are going in the right direction, since you have already started on your introduction paragraph with interesting sentences to begin it. In regards to your thesis I can see it being more developed in the first one, since I can clearly distinguish it being the one in your very last line. However I believe that both of these thesis’s are very similar, since they both involve how personal values and love conflict with their relationship. I think what you are trying to argue is good, because you can have clear topics for your supporting paragraph. Ultimately, I would opt for your first choice of thesis, since I think the wording is better.

I liked how you started off with your second thesis, its a strong statement and you linked it with Du Tenth and I believe there is a connection there. A lot of the themes on the plays that we read in class still hold true to this day, for instance the aligning of values of money or love as you mentioned on your second thesis. In today’s dating and relationship world values all over the place! I don’t wanna go too off topic but if we see divorce rate and marriages based solely on monetary benefit is huge. Remarkable work

Although both statements are somewhat wordy and a bit scattered, I think they both are ultimately strong and would lend themselves to a nicely developed essay. Try writing the one you choose more concisely, in one sentence each (as I asked everyone to do) then see what you have. This will force you to hone and focus your intent.
