Thesis: As the story goes, Felipe is able to connect so much with the person he is researching about. Soon, quite magically, Felipe transforms into the General, while Aura transforms into Consuelo.

In my final paper, I match Aura by Carlos Fuentes and Heroic Journey by Campbell. As you could see the picture I drew, there are two straight lines; one is the General’s life and the other one is Consuelo’s life. Also, you could see two other lines attached to the straight lines; one with the General’s straight line is Felipe’s and the other one with Consuelo’s straight line is Aura. Felipe lived his own life before he saw the ads. That’s why the General and Felipe have the same starting point. They lived their life since day 1. However, the reason why Aura’s line is shorter than others is that we don’t know for sure whether Aura lived a normal life like everybody else. I assume she didn’t since she is similar to an illusion that Consuelo created. Anyway, the merging points indicate that Felipe completely transformed into the General and Aura transformed into Consuelo.

Endgame

From reading the play “Endgame”, Hamm’s character was very strict, demanding and angry at the world. Hamm is a man who is stuck in the chair and has given up in life. While he is suffering in that way, he has put his parents in ash bins to make them suffer as he does. To quote: “I am willing to believe they suffer as much as such creatures can suffer” (768)- Hamm refers to his parents. In the presentation of the play, his character is well chosen, as I had imagined. Hamm’s voice represents well his strict, unfriendly character. He has this type of tone and manner of speech that makes him very influential.

I watched the movie first 20 minutes after I read the script. While I was reading the script, I was picturing myself: How the settings look like, how the actors and actress will dress up, and how they are going to talk. Everything was in the movie was very similar to what I imagined. If the director’s intention was conveying and reproducing exactly what Samuel Beckett said in the script or Samuel Beckett’s interpretation, I think he succeeded. All the things mentioned in the script was shown in the movie. How the actors convey their lines or how they move around, it was all just like I imagined. However, one thing I imagined differently. I don’t know how I got this idea but I’ve thought that handkerchief Hamm has might be clean; maybe I thought Clov would clean often. However, it wasn’t; it was filthy, but that was way make sense. Other than this, I guess the movie was really good at conveying the script.

The Metamorphosis

The Chief Clerk’s reaction and father’s reaction were different from each other on Gregor’s metamorphosis. “All the while Gregor was speaking, he wasn’t still for a moment, but, without taking his eyes off Gregor, moved towards the door,” (218.) This was the Chief Clerk’s reaction when he saw Gregor’s appearance. And this was the father’s reaction: “His father was moving forward implacably, emitting hissing sounds like a savage.” (219) The Chief Clerk’s reaction was calmer than the father’s. The father reacted more aggressively. Also, when it came to Gregor’s death, the maid and the father’s reaction were different, too. First of all, the maid found the body. She was the one who always kept checking Gregor even though it wasn’t out of affection. However, still she was the one who kept opening the door twice a day and talking to him. When she found that Gregor was dead, she said, “Have a look, it’s gone and perished.” (239) She was frightened and terrified. On the other hand, the father was happy about it. Father said, “now we can give thanks to God.” He was relieved that Gregor was finally dead. After that, the whole family moved with happiness that they are finally released from a burden.

Miss Julie. Post1

First sentence: Jean. She made him leap over her riding whip, the way you teach a dog to jump. (2)

Second sentence: Julie. Help me now. Command me—I will obey like a dog. Do me this last service save my honor. Save his name. You know what I have the will to do—but cannot do. You will it and command me to execute your will. (33)

Strindberg portrays contradicts about Miss Julie according to these two quotations. Based on the first quotation, Miss Julie seems to be a very strong woman and above of a man. Considered the background, at that time, women’s position wasn’t like today. Therefore, Miss Julie was not like every woman. However, based on the second quotation, it is just opposite of the first quotation. Miss Julie asked Jean to command because she was so indecisive and couldn’t make decision by herself. She wanted to be ordered by someone else. Interestingly, in both quotation a dog was used to explain a person who obeyed but it was the opposite; the first dog indicated a man and the second dog indicated a woman, Miss Julie. Also, a half-woman indicates Miss Julie herself. She was influenced greatly by her mother. Her mother wasn’t like every other women. She taught her daughter what usual boys need to know.
