Endgame

Maia
From reading the play “Endgame”, Hamm’s character was very strict, demanding and angry at the world. Hamm is a man who is stuck in the chair and has given up in life. While he is suffering in that way, he has put his parents in ash bins to make them suffer as he does. To quote: “I am willing to believe they suffer as much as such creatures can suffer” (768)- Hamm refers to his parents. In the presentation of the play, his character is well chosen, as I had imagined. Hamm’s voice represents well his strict, unfriendly character. He has this type of tone and manner of speech that makes him very influential.

I watched the movie first 20 minutes after I read the script. While I was reading the script, I was picturing myself: How the settings look like, how the actors and actress will dress up, and how they are going to talk. Everything was in the movie was very similar to what I imagined. If the director’s intention was conveying and reproducing exactly what Samuel Beckett said in the script or Samuel Beckett’s interpretation, I think he succeeded. All the things mentioned in the script was shown in the movie. How the actors convey their lines or how they move around, it was all just like I imagined. However, one thing I imagined differently. I don’t know how I got this idea but I’ve thought that handkerchief Hamm has might be clean; maybe I thought Clov would clean often. However, it wasn’t; it was filthy, but that was way make sense. Other than this, I guess the movie was really good at conveying the script.

I agree with what Dajung imagined during the script and then onto the movie. It was almost like precognition when I was watching the movie since i read the script. You might of imagined the handkerchief being clean because I guess in today’s society, usually the handkerchief is folded nicely and cleanly when displayed with a suit. I certainly have not seen a handkerchief being blood before.

I agree with Lauren, that the setting in the movie was very similar to what I had imagined. I had imagined the room empty, about the same size, gloomy with 2 windows up high. I thought the room would have decent walls but this room looked like they lived in an room of an abandoned house. The trash bins are next to each other in the corner and HAMM is right in the center of the room as I had imagined.

I agree with Maia about the character Hamm. Hamm is a very influential character who is also very strange. His depressing attitude towards life and his gestures in the video show, as Maia said, his life is full of suffering. I also feel that the setting of the play and that he is stuck in his chair add to the fact that his life is not at all pleasant. Hamm’s voice, like Maia added, is very revealing of his character as well.

Maia’s interpretation of Hamm is spot on. He seemed very discontent with the world and where his life was headed. He is unfriendly, and fits the script perfectly. His tone of voice and mannerisms match his character superbly. The fact that Hamm put his parents in ash bins with hopes to make them suffer as he did shows that he is psychotic, like Clov. Both characters are very strange.

I agree with Maia’s interpretation of Hamm. It does seem like he is angry and disheartened by what has happened to him. Perhaps, he is looking for retribution against the things the world did against him. He is certainly a sinister character and he seems like the person to think about strange things. The visual aspects of movie only makes it easier for readers to see the darkness and gloominess of Hamm and Clov’s life. I was too surprised by Hamm’s convincing voice. His tone of voice is deep and definitive. I can see why Clov follows his orders.

I agree with Lauren that the setting is very similar in the play and the video. When watching the video you feel very strange and depressed by looking at the very still and motionless room as characters. When I read the play I also envisioned the dark plain room like Lauren said with gray light that was evident in the video. I also like how Lauren said that the main focus was on Hamm and Clov, and I believe that the setting was dull to exemplify Hamm and Clov.
