Both Bartleby and Monkey can be seen as traditional heroes. Although the perception of each of these characters is different, they both do something for others through out the story. For example, Monkey was on a journey to find an ever-lasting life for him and the others. This made him a hero as well as a leader. Bartleby’s approach was different and less optimistic. He was seen as a nuisance to others and even looked down on himself but somehow touched the narrator. He brought out a different side of the narrator that he didn’t realize he had and because of this it also made the narrator a hero.

This prompt is well organized and is very clear and its just simply asking you to compare two characters and how they both present the same heroic theme . I like how you included a variety of topics to choose from, making the question broad. Also it can be easily answered from basic knowledge of both characters and evidence from the text.

I think this question is a great prompt to get the test taker to really understand the characters of the stories. It makes the reader think more critically about the text to find similarities of what seem to be very distinct and unique characters. The question definitely allows for the reader to think about all the three texts in more detail.

I think this is a fair question to ask. The question is very clear and straight forward. It is asking to compare the two characters and how they fall under the same heroic model. To answer the question you must know what the different heroic themes are and how they react in certain situations. Then you must remember the details of the two stories so you can put all of the details together. We went over a lot of the details to this question in class, and it would make us think of the similarities instead of always looking at the differences.

Compare and contrast the unnamed character in from Life of a Sensuous Woman; and Bartleby “Bartleby the Scrivener.” and see which character took the better route in fulfilling their goal at the end of their stories.

Jacqueline’s question is an interesting question since it is straight to the point. Given that you have three options to choose from (which are the Traditional Hero, the Satanic Hero, or the Anti- Hero), each classmate can have completely different perspectives on both characters which allows the reader to understand and maybe even agree with the writer. Rather than going with the differences of each character, Jacqueline went with the similarities which simplifies the points but also makes it challenging for the writer to find examples/quotes to support it.

In the readings, Wu Cheng’en’s Journey to the West and Bartleby one can say that life is a journey. Would you say their journey impact their life? In their journey did the roles of the characters understand the world around them and did it help present knowledge about themselves?
