Compare how Monkey from Journey to the West and Bartleby from Bartleby the Scrivener, may be viewed as any one of the following “heroes”— Traditional Hero, Anti-Hero or Satanic Hero. Provide at least one quote from each text to support your statement.

  • Aly Yoon

The narrator, from Bartleby the Scrivener, and Monkey from, Journey to the West, face challenges throughout the course of the text that results in them changing one way or another. Provide evidence from each story that shows how each character changed and whether the change resulted in a positive or negative way.

  • Jorge Moreno

Monkey from Journey to the West and the woman in the Life of a Sensuous Woman both go on their own type of heroic journey.  Discuss how their journeys are similar or different.  Provide evidence from each story.

I think Jorge poses a great question asking about the changes that Monkey and narrator in Barleby the Scrivener went through. They both faced challenges in the story that made them evolve so this question allows for great analysis for an answer. Another reason why this is a great question is because it forces the student answering to take a stance on both characters. It can be argued that Monkey changed positively or not at all, and it can also be argued that the narrator changed for the better, for worse, or not at all as well!

Preston proposes a great question in the sense that there is a similarity in both Monkey King’s journey and the narrator from Life of a Sensuous Woman’s journey. But they both seek two different things. Monkey King seeks immortality while the woman seeks traditional love. The writer can distinguish the quests that these two characters go on which makes this question very feasible. The writer can choose to go both routes with this question in he sense that both their journeys are similar and different in many aspects.
