In “Journey to the West”, would you say Monkey is more like the main character from “Life of a Sensuous woman” or Bartleby in “Bartleby the Scrivener”? Explain why do you think these two characters are similar and what character traits do both posses.

I like Joseph’s question, it is similar to the one I had come up with. This question requires you to remember the journeys both of these characters went on. You must touch upon obstacles they faced, as well as accomplishments in order to determine if they achieved enlightenment. I like this question because it gives you the freedom to critique these characters based on your own opinion, but also requires detail from both stories. I think the question is clear and is a good opportunity to compare both stories and the main characters.

I think that Bintou’s question is super clear andr really gets you to think. I think it is the type of question we will find in the exam, think it is a great practice question for Tuesday. I like how the question forces to think of three different readings with somehow similar themes. I think the based in themes one would see Monkey and the Woman relate in their journeys, Monkey and Bartleby seem to be similar in their behavior.

I really liked Keaunna’s question because the Heroic Journey model is a theme that is present in Journey to the West, Life of a Sensuous Woman and Bartlebey. I also think it’s a good question because we focused on the Heroic Journey in depth while reading monkey, so by explaining the heroic journey in the two other readings we are able to grasp a better understanding of this model. Keauna said to explain how they are similar. To add to this question it could also benefit the class to explain how the heroic journey is differs between these readings and the difference in how the characters handle their journeys.

I think that Bintou’s question is thought provoking, however too open ended. Firstly, there are always ways to compare Monkey to both the narrator and Bartleby, and secondly, similar in which way is the question asking about? it could be on the situations they are in, in the way they react to their situations, on where they end up… It also may be hard to focus on comparing one text to two different texts at the same time. However, it really does get you thinking about all three texts.
