Rue Saint-Denis

Rue Saint-Denis is located in Paris, France and is commonly known as a popular Paris red light district. Though prostitution is illegal in Paris, the area is well known to be filled with sex workers. The two central streets, called Rue Saint Denis and Rue Saint Martin, are one of the oldest streets in Paris and meet together at an archway entrance. The arch was built in 1671 and resembles the Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile (which came later on in history). This red light district also has many shops and restaurants, outside of sex shops, and it is not considered an extremely unsafe area, as many tourists do visit the area for fun. Because of the tourist attraction, it is rumored that the working women within the district seek to scam people with their temptations and charge large amounts for their services. Although the area has a deep historical background, it has also been mentioned in works such as Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables.

As Jacqueline has mentioned Rue Saint-Denis Paris, France is a well-known place for prostitution since the middle ages. This street is one of the oldest in Paris and has not always been known for prostitution but also for having many strip clubs. In the 1950’s many women worked as strippers for clubs. Prostitution has always been a very large issue in France till this day and have always have issues with deciding if it should be legal or illegal. As Jacqueline has mentioned that prostitution is against the law in Paris. In the 1940’s there was a “conservative-led clean up which allowed the closing of all brothel, even its most famous one the Aux Belles Poules. The average age of a Parisian prostitute is said to be 40 years old and not all are from Paris. Some are from Ukraine and Africa. The red light district as Jacqueline said is portrayed to be an unsafe area but in fact it is known to be fun for many tourists.

The red light district that you guys picked is very interesting since i also did a red light district in France. There are however many difference between Quartier Pigalle and Rue Saint-Denis. They are very similar in that they have sex shops and are both a tourist attractions but Quartier Pigalle is not a safe place to visit even though there are still tourists there. The red light district you picked seems to be a safe place that people can go. It also seems like there is a lot of history to see and not just the sex shops since there is an arch that dates back the the late 1600s. I just found it very interesting that red light districts even in the same country are very different.

I find it interesting how even though prostitution is illegal in France, Rue Saint-Denis is still such a popular area for tourists to come and visit. It seems like the laws against prostitution in France must be pretty loose. This area is very similar to the area that our group chose in that it is a very popular tourist attraction and has a deep history.

j.devine’s post is very interesting for me to read. The red light district in France like Rue Saint-Denis and Rue Saint Martin and the red light strict in Amsterdam which I did have a lot in common. They both have a long history and the two places seem to be an entertaining place. Besides sex shops, they have a lot of attractions for visitors to go such as restaurants and museums. Similarly, both places do not seem to be dark rather than lively and active.

One of the modern day “floating world” or as known as the red light district is the Rue Saint-Denis, it is located in Paris, France. Like what Francesca mentioned Rue Saint is also one of the oldest part of Paris known as the Red Light District. The district is known have the historic street that runs from the boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle and Rue de Rivoli and only the northern half side of the district is considered as the red light district. Back in the ancient century you would have to pay to enter the city. The Rue Saint-Denis isn’t the most fanciest place but when people go they will see several adult, peep shows, streetwalker, and clubs. Many of the prostitutes wait outside on the corners and don’t approach men unless they come to them. In France there are over 20,000 women who work as prostitutes and most of the working girls are from the Africa and Ukraine. The business is sketchy, they would hire the more attractive girls on the streets to get men and it is said that the working girls are actually less attractive.
