  1. Can the lawyer in “Bartleby the Scrivener”  be considered a hero during his time employing Bartleby, could he have done anything to make the outcome different?
  2. In Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” explain how Gregors transformation may have caused each of his family members to experience a metamorphosis as well.

In Tara’s first thesis question, there are many ways to approach it which could make for a deep discussion in her paper. It can be discussed first, if the lawyer is able to fit into a category of a hero or if he is not a hero at all. I think that the lawyer is an anti-hero due to his lack of action to save Bartleby, even though the lawyer knew that Bartleby had problems. Along with the prompt you would have to first figure out whether the lawyer is a hero. If it is argued that he is not a hero then it can be explained how the lawyer could have done things differently to become a hero.

The second thesis question is based on Gregor’s family and it would need to be explained if they underwent a metamorphosis of their own as well as how they underwent this process. The paper would have to speak about all of Gregor’s family members as well as himself and how Gregor’s metamorphosis influenced his family. The paper can talk about if a certain family member underwent a metamorphosis or not and how it affected their life as well as Gregor’s.

The first question is effective because it is asking us to look at the lawyer as a hero. There are different types of heros, for example, there’s a Traditional Hero, Anti-Hero, and Satanic Hero, so it is likely that the lawyer could fall into one of these three categories.

For your second question, I think this is a very interesting approach. Most questions about The Metamorphosis focus on Gregor. Your question asks us to focus on the family and the role they played in all of this. I think this is an effective method that can help us look at this story from a different perspective.
