Thesis Questions- Joseph Morreale

  1. Life of a Sensous Woman satirizes the Japanese lifestyle. Through the sensuous woman, what does the author argue the role of women in society is? How do the roles of women contribute to the pleasure-seeking society?
  2. In Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, Gregor works diligently to support his family. After his physical transformation into a cockroach, he is ostracized and treated as an outcast by his family. What are the limits to familial love? What does his family’s intolerance say about unconditional love?

I found both of the questions Joseph wrote really interesting. The Sensuous woman stated she had thousands of lovers but throughout the short story I believe the author argued the role of women in society is to please men and their desires. In The Metamorphosis, Gregor is no longer accepted or appreciated within his family after he wakes up as a cockroach even after everything he did for them. This story does make me question what the limits are to familial love and whether unconditional love actually exists. Isn’t family support to love and support you through everything? If ones family doesn’t accept you for who you are, then who will?

I really like the first question that you wrote. Analyzing the role of a woman through this story is very thought provoking and without a doubt quite different from our current idea of the role of a woman.
Your second question also had me thinking- perhaps even more than the first. It makes each person question not only the story, but their own life as well. Is family life even unconditional?
