The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, is a novel about a salesman that turns into a gignormous bug. This salesman was the sole provider for his family, even taking to pay back the debts of his father. This novel tracks the transformation the salesman, Gregor, under goes while having an identity crisis from being a insect, but still trying to remain apart of the family. One major theme, as signified by the title of the novel is change. The novel follows Gregor and his mental and physical state changing into an insect and it follows his family. His sister is transforming into a woman, now putting the end result of her family as a priority and trying to provide. His father transforms from a man at rest basically entering into his retirement, to a man back at work providing for his family. Lastly his mother transforms from a woman with hope for her son to get better to a realist.
The Metamorphosis was truly weird to me in the way the characters reacted to the transformation of Gregor to an insect. they acted as if it was a common thing. Even when Gregor woke up he wasn’t completely distraught.
“What’s happened to me,’ he thought. It was no dream. His room, a proper room for a human being, only somewhat too small, lay quietly between the four well-known walls.”
Was it common in their metaphysically world that uncommon things happen to human beings? How were they even sure that the insect was Gregor? Why did no one suspect Gregor to be eaten by the insect that took his place the next morning?
This video, by the Book Tutor, on youtube shows a illustrated summary of The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka. The digital user uses these simple illustrations to help the digital audience to grasp the concepts and the setting of the novel. This novel is almost impossible to picture due to the seemingly impossible events that take place and the nonchalant behavior towards it. In 2:15 – 2:30 the digital user creates this scene of perplexity and shows once again the weird dynamics of this unfortunate metaphysical world where humans can turn into bugs.
