Juan’s Post on Antigone

Antigone is part of the three Theban Plays written by Sophocles. This Greek tragedy is centered around the theme of loyalty to the state or supernatural law. The two main characters, Creon and Antigone have distinct personalities which helps us depict where their loyalty lies. I’d like you to start thinking about the traits of the two main characters and focus on the question; who do you think is right and why?

  • The way Antigone responded against Creon was extremely brave. Antigone was right because she was trying to honor her brother even though he has done harm to the government.

  • I believe Antigone was right because at the end of the day, its not fair that one of her brothers was looked to as a hero and the other as a traitor. I also believe she is right because there are certain unalienable rights that Creon takes away by not letting her bury him. Since she understood the consequences and still went ahead and did it shows how strongly she believed that he deserved at least a normal burial. Creon should have no authority in matters like this one.
