On October 18, 2011 there was a protest outside of Union Township High School in Union NJ against the Facebook comments coming from one of the teacher named Viki Knox. Her Facebook comments consist of saying that being gay is “perverted” and “a sin”. She also compared it to cancer. The article can be viewed at the bottom. However, during the protest there was a big discussion in which questions if we really do have freedom of speech when it comes to posting comments on one’s Facebook. I believe a teacher should still be cautious on what she writes on her page or better yet keep her comments private from the rest of the people on Facebook. Unfortunately, she didn’t do that and one teacher confronted the principal to look into this. One of my friends was in the protest and spoke during the board meeting saying that she doesn’t feel safe in school anymore because of that, and feels a bit threaten now. A student shouldn’t feel threaten nor feel uncomfortable when going to school because a school’s environment should be safe for all not just for a certain group of people. I feel safe in Baruch college and I am glad I do because I don’t want to spend the rest of my 4 or 5 years studying at a institution that I constantly feel unsafe at.
Please help the Garden State Equality get the Township of Union board of education do the right thing for the students who attend Union High School.
