Although the Montgomery Bus Boycott occurred some time after the Brown Case, Rosa Parks is still recognized as being an individual who publicized resistance to unfair segregation laws. Due to her resistance, a boycott soon developed. Soon after, the law which required segregation on buses was overturned.
I find this to be a significant change between the 1953 and 1960 because it paved the way for many more laws to be overturned while giving hope to the black American people. She helped to support, create, and implement the civil rights movement using resistance tactics. She peacefully decided not to give her seat up for the white men. Rosa Parks brought the meaning of enjoying freedom in all ways to light.
Rosa Parks is responsible for the change in the law that supported segregation on public buses. However, in the interim she lost her job and suffered many other uneasy consequences. Ultimately, she received recognition along with awards and respect. [kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/C4OTdlXN66Y" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]
Rosa Parks is an admirable female figure due to her courage and determination during the Civil RIghts Movement. During these times it seemed impossible to turn a nation upside down. It was African-Americans against a nation that had been standing up for hundreds of years. But It didn’t stop African- Americans from uniting and defending their rights as human beings. And Rosa being African-American and a female is what made a difference.
I think the Montgomery Bus Boycott by the black community was the first step to indicate that without black community the economy can not work properly. After the boycott, the transportation businessman and state realized that the buses have to change their existing sitting policy for the Negros.
I was reading through chapter 24 the segregation and discrimination of employment and housing was severe in america, so only whites could get wealth and the advantages of economy growth only happened to most of white people. At least all of american should have equal rights in public institution besides business fields. This movement is unavoidable anyway.
I like the way how Montgomery Bus Boycott involves no violence. It was such a great way to start up the civil rights movement. Also it’s very interesting that a woman acutally showed her strong belief to whole American society and was the center of the civil rights movement.
This is a good video Monique. It complements my post as well about Jim Crow Law. As a Brazilian citizen I had never heard about this law or even about Rose Park. I think that it is ashamed how USA has used double standard in the world. In my country people see USA as exemple of equal rights, human rights, and freedom, but inside its border there is less fredom and human rights then I have ever see in my country. It is very disappointed. Now, I start to understand why Obama election was so important for the african Americans. this history is not too far from us. If you think about it, 50 years ago, it is not much time.
I believe that the Montgomery Bus Boycott was one of the most important powerful and effective protest for change. They directly hurt the city’s economy by stopping the use of city buses for a year. Instead they set up a bus system of their own, using their own cars and many white people also helped.
I was very glad to see this up.
I also agree that the Montgomery Bus Boycot was a very well chosen method to show their disapproval for racism. It left such an impact and initiated a change. And I also agree with what the professor had said today; the civil rights movement required leaders that were not only well determined but also has connectinons and involvement in politics.
I agree to Monique’s opinion. Even though a big part of the reason for the success of this boycott related to bus company’s profit since 75% of passengers were the black American people, Rosa Parks’ action showed that how a courage to act of one person can influence so many people and start a change.
Although our professor wants to make argument against that the Rosa Parks was the resource of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, he thinks because Rosa’s politician background, good network with those potential civil right movement leaders. I agree his opinion. However, I still think it’s Rosa Parks’ refusal was a symbol of the cause of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Indeed, I agree… this was a great start for the Civil Rights Movement. I think it was a genius move for the Civil Rights Movement to boycott the buses. By demonstrating non violence, yet with much strong beliefs, African-Americans were able to conduct successful demonstrations/protests.
