Prohibition of alcohol occurs in the United States. Prohibition in the United States began January 16, 1919 with the ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S Constitution and effected on January 16, 1920, and it continued throughout the 1920s. Prohibition was finally repealed in 1933. This picture shows that Beer barrels are destroyed by prohibition agents in an unknown location on Jan. 16, 1920 and was published by Associated Press. While Prohibition was successful in reducing the amount of liquor consumed, it tended to destroy society by other means. Prohibition became increasingly unpopular during the Great Depression, especially in large cities.

Not surprisingly, the US was not the only country to put abolition on alcohol in the twentieth century, USSR tried to do it 4 times over the history, and non of the attempts were fortunate enough. Russians drank and drink vodka a lot. The last anti-alcoholic campaign was introduced in 1985-1987 just at the threshold of the USSR collapse by Mikhail Gorbachev, colloquially known as the “Dry Law”. Prices of vodka, wine and beer were raised, and their sales were restricted in amount and time of day. People who were caught drunk at work or in public were prosecuted. Drinking on long-distance trains and in public places was banned. But it only forced people to produce vodka illegally, usually of poor quality and it became a cause for many alcoholic poisonous deaths all over the country.
Although Prohibition was a law at that time, but it didn’t prohibit the Mobs to smuggle alcohol from Canada. I remember the 1987 movie “The Untouchables”, the Chicago Mob boss Al Capone made millions of dollars from smuggling alcohol from Canada. It was not a good law at any time from my view. Alcohol business is a huge business for a country’s economy, government can make a lot of tax income from it.
I agree with Bogdan Prohibition resulted in an increase of crime rather than reducing it. It seems this amendment only increased the amount of alcohol consumed which is something many question. Why would the passage of a new amendment prohibiting alcohol make people drink more? Im assuming its human nature, we want what we cant have.
The prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s in the United States is one of most interesting events in American history. While it was illegal to manufacture or distribute it was not unlawful to possess it for personal use. The provision allowed Americans to possess alcohol in their homes and share with family and guests as long as it stayed inside and not given away to anyone outside the home. The downfall of this propaganda was that there was not enough enforcement to control all of the illegal operations associated with prohibition.
