Bonnie Parker (October 1, 1910 – May 23, 1934) and Clyde Barrow (March 24, 1909 – May 23, 1934) were well known outlaws, robbers and criminals who, with their gang, traveled the Central United States during the Great Depression. The photo above was found in their hiding place in Missouri.
Their exploits captured the attention of the American public during what is sometimes referred to as the “public enemy era” between 1931 and 1934. Though known today for his dozen-or-so bank robberies, Barrow in fact preferred to rob small stores or rural gas stations. The gang is believed to have killed at least nine police officers and committed several civilian murders. They were eventually ambushed and killed in Louisiana by law officers. The video below is the scene after their death. Bonnie and Clyde have become a symbol of dangerously in love couple and an inspiration for numerous movies, theater plays and songs.
Sehyung, I agree that such actions were terrible, but they are not at all representative of how Americans as a whole lived during that time, and it surely is not representative of all of Americans. The reason they were so popular at the time is that their actions were romanticized in mass media and so young people especially looked up to them. But again, most people saw them to be the ruthless murderers they were and they were killed in the same manner with which they treated civilians.
This crime would be historically important to public. From 1900s to the present days, this event is one of most horrible stories that I heard and that might affect the society to think about how brutal the crime was at that time of the great depression. Also even the problems would be more crucial in these days because it seems the crime is getting more brutal.
I saw one movie that is exact same story of this. The movie name is “Perfect Get Away” and the actress is Milla Jovovich. What the couple had done to civilians was horrible and I did not know it was true story of America. ewww…. I am little bit scared to live here in this country!! -_-;;;
