Japanese Internment Camp

The video shown includes various propaganda messages to provoke fear in Americans. It is very important in giving an idea of how Americans reacted and view Japanese Americans at the time.

Parts of the video will be used in the film to provide original images of to further prove the accuracy of the film. The propaganda messages in the video will be used in the video to display how the government portrayed Japanese Americans.

The main and final message that would be conveyed in the movie is that America is a nation run by fear and through fear America do horrible acts on others.

H1N1 Pandemic

The H1N1 outbreak was a frightening virus that had many Americans rushing to emergency rooms. The symptoms were general flu type symptons which made it hard to determine whether or not one was sick with the H1N1 flu or the regular flu. Some say the pandemic is not over. Although the United States made the vaccine very accessible to the public there remained a surplus of the vaccine. The attached photo was extracted from the New York Times, the photo was taken by Michael Buholzer/Rueters.

9/11 and requirements for Muslim immigrants in U.S.A

Photo: Mario Tama/Getty Images (Nov 17, 2003)

From the image website, I found that Suman Raghunathan, of the New York Immigration Coalition, yells during a protest marking the anniversary of the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s special registration program November 17, 2003 in New York City. The post-9/11 program requires men from mostly Arab and Muslim countries to register with the government. In addition, 13,000 Arab and Muslim immigrants face deportation proceedings as a result of the program.

The image is representing the 9/11 effect in the American society. Because of the 9/11 fact, the government officials seem that the Muslim community is the outsider in this country and they need special requirement or commitment to become a citizen or become a legal resident in U.S.A.

The New Deal

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was one of the New Deals most ambitious programs. This program helped to put millions of people back to work by funding projects for highways, roads, school buildings, and sewage plants among the many other public works projects during the Great Depression Era. The poster above was frequently displayed nearby one of the funded work sites.

The New Deal was a group of economic programs implemented during president Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first term in office. These programs were focused responses to the effects of the Great Depression. Overall, the programs can be summarized as focusing on the “3 Rs” which were relief, recovery, and reform. A number of programs were passed which still effect us today including the Glass-Steagall Banking Act and the Social Security Act.

The Gulf War (1990-1991)

The Mile of Death

The Gulf War began on August 2, 1990 after the Iraqi army invaded the nation of Kuwait. There are many significant aspects to this war. Particularly for the USA, it emerged as a world leader and dominant military force. Under the Presidency of George H. Bush, the US armed forces rallied partnership with nations around the world to condemn Iraq’s decision to invade it’s neighbor, Kuwait. After failure to respond to diplomatic efforts for Iraq to end the invasion, the US armed forces along side allied forces from the United Nations (UN) and Saudi Arabia went into Kuwait. The war continued to be waged for six more months and finally ended on February 28th, 1991. This war is especially important to me and my family, who were residents in Kuwait when the Iraqi army first invaded. As a result of the US army’s efforts, my family was given safe passage to escape to Jordan, by car, on September of 1990. I was born the following January 1991.  Looking back, my family often tell me horrendous stories of the war and how fortunate we are. As a family, we are grateful to the US troops for their heroic efforts. I am blessed to be alive today!

The 21st Amendment

On December 5th, 1933, prohibition on alcohol beverages by 18th amendment was ended. The 21st amendment is the only amendment ratified by state conventions instead of state legislatures which reflects the influence of deep-rooted politics inside the lawmakers.

Segregation

Souza

“The Montgomery bus boycott came about a year after a landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling outlawed deliberate racial segregation in public schools.
But divisions remained.

Three students at Clinton High School picketed their school as it became the first state-supported school in Tennessee to integrate, in August 1956.”

It is sad that the segragation problem still is present in the  America society. In June of 2003, the  Bush administration asked the Supreme Court to ignore the Affirmative action . Furthermore, the candidete for senator Rand Paul do not intend to enforce  the civil rights act against segregation.Does it seem that some people intend to increase discrimination?

The crash of 1929

This image is from Time.com, and it belongs to the Bettmann-Corbis archive. The picture was taken during the Great Depression that began on October 29, 1929, which is also known as Black Tuesday.

The first time I saw this picture was during a recent visit to the MoMA. At first, the image makes me smile because it shows a humorous aspect in a tragic time. During the Great depression approximately 25% of population was unemployed and affected every segment of society. The picture is important to me because it reminds me that history is repeating itself. Like in the Great depression, the world is now experiencing a huge economic downturn due to the failure of the traditional financial system.
