Women’s Suffrage Debate

This picture was taken in 1971 in front of the White House. Women are picketing for their rights to vote. Women finally started to have a movement for their rights to vote. It eventually led to the Nineteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution which prohibits each state and the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote because of that citizen’s sex.

This event is very important because it let women vote. If this had not happened, women wouldn’t be able to vote even in now days. Also it happened not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world. It shows how women were treated unfairly and now that from these movements, they are slowly getting back their rights as a human being. Women are finally taking actions!!

Assassination of John F. Kennedy

From the Library of Congress

This picture was taken in Novmber 22nd of 1963 in Texas, few minutes before the assassination of president John F. Kennedy. He was shot during his presidential motorride in Dallas by an assassin named Lee Harvey Oswald. This picture can be accessed through the Library of Congress Prints and Photograph division Washington.

This event is significant in American history because he was the forth president to be assassinated, after Lincoln, Garfield, and McKinley. His death raised questions and objections for many Americans; even to this day, there are still a lot of conspiracy theories and debates regarding this event.

The Symbol of Freedom and Friendship

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World

To the sculptor form is everything and is nothing. It is nothing without the spirit – with the idea it is everything.

– Victor Hugo, May 13, 1885

The Statue of Liberty, standing in New York Harbor, is the most symbolic sculpture in United States. Since the inauguration on October 28th 1886, it is the first thing sea-borne visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans see upon entering New York Harbor and has been known as a beacon of freedom to much of the world.

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World is the symbol of ideals of human liberty and friendship to the whole world. It was a gift, in 1884, by the people of France to represent the friendship between United States and France established during American Revolution. The statue is situated in Liberty Island in New York harbor, and French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue. The Statue of Liberty was declared a national monument by Presidential proclamation on October 15, 1924 and it earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1984.

The image is taken from the “Statue of Liberty” article of Wikipedia posted on November 13, 2007. This image is originated by William Warby on Flickr captured from the Circle Line ferry, Manhattan, New York.

The Iraq War

This image is from Dear Kitty. Some Blog. It explains why President George W. Bush opened a war with Iraq in 2003 and indicates the U.S  is mainly going for oil profits.

I think this image is important because the Iraq war has lasted for so many years, and  it still hasn’t ended yet. More than 4300 American died in this war and over $700 billion of American money are spent on this war. why should we seek for other’s unsure profit but create an immense cost to ourselves. The cost of lives  is always unmeasurable!

Times Square Bomb Scare

I found this picture from an article wrritten by fox news about the recent times sqare bomb scare. Since 9/11 the United States has never been the same. Now, 9 years later in 2010, this recent bomb scare of times square is a reminder of how the threat of terrorism continues to exist. Since the man was unsuccessful, we are very fortunate to have escaped this dangerous plot of terrorists. Times Square is one of nyc’s most distinguished places and it is definately important that the city does whatever it can to protect it, along with everywhere else. Terrorists are continuously trying to discrupt life in America, and with the bomb scare they caused great panic and alarm. Therefore, this serves as a reminder that the United States still needs to continue its fight against terrorism regardless of any circumstances.

Alexander Graham Bell and the telephone

Telephone Sketch

This is a picture of a sketch that Alexander Graham Bell drew of the telephone around 1876, one of the most important inventions of the common era.  This picture is courtesy of the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress.

The invention of the telephone transformed communication into what it is today, every person being one touch and a few seconds away.  What used to take weeks to do, for example contacting someone in Hong Kong from New York, takes only moments.

This has significance to me because my younger brother is currently studying abroad in Israel, and I can speak to him whenever I want to.

Miracle on Hudson

This picture was taken by Eric Thayer and was published on MSNBC on January 15, 2009. The plane struck a flock of birds during takeoff at LaGuardia Airport and it caused an immediate loss of thrust from both engines. However, the pilot managed to land the plane safely on the water. This miracle is important because all the passengers survived. There were 155 passengers on board that day.
