Respond to the Voice of Freedom p346 “Triple Identity”
After reading this article, I had and have strong the same feelings. Puwat Chaukamnoethanok has complex cultural identity. As he says, there are two major different kinds of immigrants. One is they immigrate to a new country, because they want to get a better life; the other one is they want to create better education environment and opportunities for their children.
My father has been America for 10 years. I think he wanted to achieve both goals when he came. Although he didn’t graduate from the elementary school, he recognized totally that the education was very important for children’s future.
I had been America for one and half year. I strongly feel racism and discrimination as Puwat feeling because of our physical appearance, influent English, which I never suffered from when I was in China. Before we came to America, they always say that America is a free country, which is full of opportunities. If you work hard, you can be whatever you want to be.
I agree this opinion. When I just came to America, I was not able to talk a full sentence, I couldn’t find a job, and I failed ACT test. I felt extremely frustrated about myself and I wanted to give up, gave up what I wanted to do. But, I didn’t. I kept working hard. I didn’t have off days for myself.
Because Puwat believes that as a immigrant, we need to work harder, and we can be successful. That’s what Puwat believes, that is also I believe.
L.A. Riots of 1992
[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.youtube.com/v/1bEG2AMaM7w" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent" /]
Los Angeles riots were sparked on April 29, 1992, when a jury acquitted four Los Angeles Police officers accused in the videotaped beating of African American motorist Rodney King following a high-speed pursuit. Thousands of people in the Los Angeles area rioted over the six days following the verdict. At that time, similar, smaller riots and anti-police actions took place in other locations in the United States and Canada. Widespread assault, arson, looting, and murder occurred, and property damages topped roughly $1 billion. In all, 53 people died during the riots and thousands more were injured.
These riots show the significance of law enforcement and how discrimination can lead to more than just injustice but death. These people had seriously lost their minds as you can see this clip shows human beings behaving as animals.

NASA spacecraft lands on Mars (1997)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuGFx7m5XNc
I found this video on www.youtube.com. It was an original BBC news cast. NASA sent this spacecraft to Mars in order to search for life (water). The mission carried a series of scientific devices to analyze the Martian atmosphere, climate, and the composition of its rocks and soil. One of the scientific purposes of the mission was to examine whether Mars could once have supported microbial life forms. The mission was successful and an amazing discovery. Knowing that other planets besides Earth can sustain life is very encouraging for our future.

Rodney King Beating (March 3, 1991)
This footage is from YouTube. It showes that African-American King is lying on the ground surrounded by police officers, who are repeatedly striking him with their batons.
The original creator named George Holiday videotaped it from a distance. His footage caused a media sensation and raised tensions between the black community and the Los Angeles Police Department. It offered a strong evidence of police brutality over King.
The four police officers were acquitted for the beating. The police brutality and court ruling showed the existence of racial discrimination and social inequality. The result triggered the 1992 Los Angeles Riots and it was also expanded in other locations in the U.S. Two police officers were found guilty and the other two were acquitted after the riots.

Civil Rights Movement
I think this video is important, because make us think how much discrimination the African- American people have faced , I think is time to stop judge people for their skin color. Some times you are who you are and not who you want to be, so it’s time to accept all the people and don’t forget that everybody deserve respect and love.

Israeli-Palestinian Agreement September 13, 1993
On September 13, 1993, Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat signed a peace agreement sponsored by United States.
This event was important because it showed United States leadership in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Although the agreement generated a lot of hope, time has showed that the conflict is still not resolved.

Mike Tyson Bites Ear Off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuA4fLnG0Ig&feature=related
This event was in June, 1997.
Mike Tyson‘s boxing license is suspended for at least a year and he is fined $3 million for biting Evander Holyfield‘s ear in a televised match.
In the interview with Oprah, Tyson said “‘I know I can’t beat you and you don’t have to knock me out this time to beat me.” When he told Oprah he bit Holyfield because he was pissed off because he was such a great fighter, he couldn’t have been more honest
Tyson was an all time great boxer. I was shocked by his behavior. What a shame!

Smells Like Teen Spirit
This here is a video of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit written by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl and produced by Butch Vig. The song was released on September 10th, 1991. The song itself starts slow and gradually builds up in tempo and dynamics. The vocals and screams of Kurt Cobain shows emotion and the angst of the younger generations are portrayed brilliantly in this song.
This video and song is important in American history as it redefined the music industry. With this song comes the creation of an alternative rock type music called grunge. This song would shortly become the unofficial anthem for the younger generations known as Generation X. For those who haven’t heard this song yet I strongly recommend you do. Take five minutes to enjoy this song.
