Hoovervilles

This is an image of a Hooverville that I would use in a montage of my film as the character recounts his experience living in one of these shanty towns. They are dubbed Hooverville after President Herbert Hoover who let the country slide into depression. I would like to show my audience that Hoovervilles formed across America and were the last resort for homeless families during the Great Depression. Ordinary people were forced to build new homes for themselves out of whatever material they could find. Most of the residents of Hoovervilles were unemployed and begged for food from charities and other families.

Good and Hard Times in America 1920’s and 1930’s

This short video tell us the economic prosperity that in the 1920’s the American people enjoyed and also tell us that how in the 1930’s the American faced one one the most dark moments in their life, this was the Great Depression. I just want to mention that life is full of hard and good moments, and all these moments and events make us who we are. This short movie I will play in my movie after the civil war background.

The Great Depression

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YM8yxBL21Pk

This is a video that I want to use in my movie. I write about a factory director and his family’s life during the Great Depression and the New Deal. This video portrays the big difference between the roaring twenties and the Great depression. High suicidal rate, starvation and poorness were showed in this video. By adding this video into my movie, I hope people can get a clear sense about what was the real life of  a person who lived during the Great Depression.

Statue of Liberty

This is an image of statute of liberty. It was a gift given to the United States by France in 1886 to represent friendship between two countries established during the American Revolution. This image would be portrayed early in my movie. In the background during the Gilded Age, this statute would serve as a symbol of hope for immigrants. Many immigrants would look up to this statute to not only admire America but also find hope of freedom.

Tales of an African American

Oprah Winfrey in The Color Purple by djabonillojr.2008.

Oprah Winfrey will act a grandmother’s role in my screenplay. I envision her dress like this throughout my screenplay to demonstrate the type of clothing African American wore during the early 1900’s. The cane field in the background will be a set-design in the beginning of my screenplay.  The screenplay will focus on turning points for African Americans between 1865 and 1945. Events such as Voting Rights, Segregation, & Halem Renaissance will be portrayed.

Reminder and Thanks

A final reminder to all that the final paper is due at midnight tonight.  Your paper should be sent as an email attachment.  I will write back confirming receipt.  You should also publish your blog post (part of the final assignment) by midnight.

Many thanks to all of you for your contributions to the course.  I commend all of your hard work and diligence.  I wish you the best in the future.

And one last thing: there were two final lecture slides that I didn’t get a chance to show last night.  They give the definition of scalawag and carpetbagger.  You probably learned the definitions from your textbook, the movie clips we watched yesterday, or some other source, but just in case, here they are (they are also posted on the “slide lectures” page, which is now complete).

Political Cartoon of Carpetbagger

Carpetbagger:
A person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction.

Scalawag:
A white Southerner who collaborated with northern Republicans during Reconstruction, often for personal profit. The term was used derisively by white Southern Democrats who opposed Reconstruction legislation.

The Coral Sea battlis is one of major naval battle in South Pacific ocean near Australia during WWII. After the U.S had been attacked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, by imperial Japanese forces, The U.S and its Allies got into World War. While Japanese military forces invaded Tulagi in Southeasterrn island, the U.S naval and air forces attacked the Japanese aircraft carriers in May 4, 1942. Even though there was tactical victory that made the enemy’s ships sink by bombing, the war would not end up until Japan got totally destroyed later on.

Hitler before we Knew Him

This is a picture of Hitler as a soldier. It conveys how he is no different than any other soldier and went through what everyone else went. What differentiates him and turns him into the Hitler we know today must be determined by the viewers since there in so right answer.

Santa Fe railway in 1885

Sanra Fe railway was completed in 1885. As this map shown, it connected most states on the continent. what I want to express is that, the  railroad constuction opened a national market for businesses during the  Second Industrial Revolution. In other words, it formed the foundation of  our mature economy.

I Don’t Want To Set the World on Fire

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7AZIvDD5Lw

This here is a piece of music that I would put in my movie. My movie will be about the stock market crash and the struggles of people living during the time. While this song was made in the 40’s, I feel the tone and sound can be matched to my movie. It’s very mellow and slow and would fit with the feelings of people at that time.
