The Girl

My mother always tells me what to do everyday and tell me to learn everything she teaches me because it is for my benefit. Although I know that my mother is telling me these things because she want me to understand how to live a better life and I am truly grateful, but I am a “girl” that need my childhood and I don’t really want to know how to live my life in the future. I am a “girl” that want to play and not think about how to make herbal medicines and cook a fish because I don’t need that in the future and I do understand my mother don’t want me to be hungry because I do know that she came from a poor, rural family. My mother always tells me to behave, but why should I behave if I can play and I don’t want to act like an adult that need to learn how to behave in a different situation because I should have an innocent mind that’s always happy and playful. When my mother told me that every relationship have different kind and some don’t work out. To tell you thetruth, I don’t really understand her because in my mind everyone that is nice to me means that I should be nice to them. And when she told me that one day I will go into a relationship with a boy and a sometime boy and girl will bully each other, but why will get into a relationship with a boy all I think about them as friends. I think my mother worries too much for me.

Extra Credit

Going inside the Carlton Arms Hotel was an experience that is so unexpected and different from what I know and understand because the minute you walk in it seen like you are in a whole different world that is full color and arts that many people are not used to. This hotel is living a life if it self. Walking to room to room and each rooms have a different feeling to it that is comfortable or odd. Within the two rooms contain Helen Oliver Adelson’s art that is different in way that it come alive. Looking her painting, the thing that I keep at looking is the eyes within her painting because I felt like it want to tell us something but is unable to. So the name of this solo exhibition is “Ghosts” and I think I understand why. I believe it is name “Ghosts” because is like a ghost that I have a untold stories that they want to shared but they are unable to.

We was unable to enter the third room because someone is renting it out but I ask the person on the front who told us that Helen Oliver Adelson was an artist there for many years and the third room was more of her old works that you display and the other two rooms is her most recent arts.

Even the bathroom and the shower was different from any other hotel and we can tell it was build a long time ago because the bathroom and shower is built separately and the location is different. Also everyone within this hotel had to share the same bathroom and shower because the room don’t have one. 12277237_10208033129808153_1384911104_n 12278138_10208033130008158_738267868_n 12285700_10208033132448219_440986829_n 12285921_10208033133408243_1262550808_n 12285952_10208033130568172_454742907_n 12285952_10208033130568172_454742907_n 12305623_10208033132048209_2016039916_n 12309202_10208033130688175_196440116_n 12309219_10208033129288140_1973072255_n

Both of these character show the work of art because it show that a painting don’t tell the whole story but the people tell the story that make the painting more interesting.Mrs. Dalloway and Mr. Smith both see the world as the same because they both is living fear. Both believe that life is not important and like to be privacy with the society or to themselves.

The car stop on flushing Main Street, Angie step out of the car and enter the train station and write into the 7 train and saw the Sing couple arguing about something, in Angie’s mind she thought what to argue about early in the morning. Turning around and saw Kelly and she is wearing a pink mini dress that Angie really want and she thought to herself that she really need that dress. Angie look at the window and saw is the 34 the street which she need to transfer to the 6 train. She saw the 6 train and she walk in and saw there is no seat so she stand next to tall man and she imgray in her head if she is that tall then she can see every thing. She look at the window and saw is 23 the street  where she need to get off. She got off the 6th train. Discourse On The Logic Of Language and Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass

M.NourbeSe Philip’s poem, “Discourse on the Logic of Language” is a powerful, influence and meaningful poem. She uses language to passed toward her message with repeat words that are meaningful and important to get her message out. Toward her poem she repeat the “tongue” and I think this word is very important for her because our language is toward our tongue to speak the words out that are story, ideas and our words. Her poem is so different from other poem I read because the way she form her words show the way of the important within her story. She use the prefix of “man-“ which mean the power of people: manpower, manufacture, manipulate, maneuver, manage and manhood which mean people have become and use to survive in the society.

M.NourbeSe Philip’s poem can relate to Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass because both literatures using language to expressed their story and message. Douglass used the language to tell his story for the people after his death, which make is story immortal because it is going to live within people’s live forever. In his narrative it is similar to the poem because he words that go beyond the words that he put in his paper.

In the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, he wrote “No words, no tear, no prayer” which make the slave-owner inhumane because those expression shows what human should have and this sentence is describe a monster that don’t have any feeling. In our class discussion, we talk about “I wish I could commit to paper the feeling with which I beheld it”, I don’t feel like we can be in his shoe because I believe that violence that he wrote in the narrative is not the whole story and how horrible of a experience that he saw. But I do believe that we is using his body to show when the language is stop because his body’s expression are a way of connecting with the reader because the reader can sometime feel those body expression.

Note for Sep 25

The Age of Enlightenment (17th -18th Centuries in Europe and American)

Enlightenment: a movement of the 18th centuries that stressed the belief that science and logic give people more knowledge and understanding than tradition and religion (Merriam-Webster)

Insight, understanding, awareness, wisdom, education, learning and knowledge

“Cogito Ergo Sum” Or “I think therefore I am” – Rene Descartes, 1637

Why this so important?

  • “Individual” thinking and not myth or religion that take over your mind
  • You are not just a person but what make you a person
  • “Think” mean analysis; try to find the trust and “reason”. A point of view by the experience that one have

“On life’s vast ocean diversely we sail, reason the card, but passion is the gale” –Alexander Pope, Essay on Man, 1733

  • Life is like ocean because an ocean is wide and large
  • Ocean can be a rocky journey, just like life
  • We all experience thing differently (culture, who we met, class, race, gender and etc.)

What is a gale?

Very strong high wind. A factor to moves the boat. A boat will not move without wind. -> Life need factor to move further. We can’t live without passion or reason; we need both without we cannot move further

Universal Human Right

“Liberty”, everyone should have liberty because we are human but in the 17 centuries, human is only based on rich white men

Disadvantage

People who are not consider human like slave and women

Example: During colonel expeditions, they will steal, kill, take to get what they wanted. They will only kill people that are not white men

Scientific Methods

Enlightenment thinkers believed that the advances of science and industry heralded a new age of progress for humankind.

Sciences and mathematics

Deism

(Merriam- Webster) a movement or system of thought advocating natural religion, emphasizing morality, and in the 18th century denying the interference of the Creator with the laws of the universe

(Class) creator of the world and he just walk away from his creation

Candide By Voltaire

The book is full of violence and guilty, Not really reality and not realistic

Candide is a very unlucky, native (he went on the journey even if it have a lot of mishap just to find his love), innocent

His think in a circle (“ it’s because it’s”)

He allows thing to happen to him because he believe thing happen and it happen and don’t take control

Pangloss

  • Teacher of Candide -> homeless, nose have fall off (“deformed beggar”)
  • “Sufficient reason” = sex
  • Pangloss’s nose fall off because he have syphilis because he is sleeping around
  • He have irrational reasoning -> he believe that thing are not avoidable; “we should have neither chocolate nor cochineal”- he accept that he is dying because they have chocolate

Dominant Culture

  • The dominant culture in a society is the group whose members are in the majority or who wield more power than other groups.
  • What is for the best? (For the people)
    • But really is for the high class benefit

The land of Eldorado

  • Gold and jewels
  • Happy
  • Utopian country – advanced scientific knowledge, no religious conflict, no court system and place no value, plentiful gold and jewels
  • Candide is not happy because Cunegonde is not there

The Last Part

  • Candide, Cunégonde, Cacambo, Pangloss, and the old woman settle into a comfortable life on the farm but
  • Candide’s idea now don’t follow Pangloss’s idea
  • Candide take control of his life (his garden)
  • He can control thing within his control
  • Thinking, active, reasoning -> garden (take care of it) understand people’s limit

Chinatown, Manhattan

Story, “Tell a story, so that we understand why and how this world was created, who our ancestors were and where they came from, so the we understand where we are and where we maybe be going”

I truly believe that my story start in this place because Chinatown is the first place my family go to for a better life. My grandpa and my father work their entire youth for my family to live a comfortable lifestyle. My life is the way it is because of my father and grandpa.

Albany, Brooklyn

Journey to the West, “They are: wide, great, wise, intelligence, true, conforming, nature, sea, sharp, wake to complete and awakening. Your rank falls precisely on the word…”Wake to Vacuity”.

I spent my childhood in this place because this is my parents’ Chinese restaurant where I learn that money doesn’t grow on the tree but the older I get the more I learn. I believe that one cant stop learning within their lifetime.

Queens Village, Queens

The Heart Sutra, “There is no suffering…no stopping, no path”

This is my home and it also my safe place so it have n suffering and no stopping for who I am. Is a place where I grew and learn.
