Girl

Make sure you do this, make sure you do that. Mother is always telling me what to do. It’s like she wants to mold me into being a person who she wants me to be. I dont even do some of the things she blames me of doing. All these directions of how to do things and yet she still believes ill be that type of woman shed been trying to prevent me from becoming, a slut. I know that all she has in mind is my best interest and for me to someday be like her married and with a husband but in all honesty that is not at all what I have in mind yet. I am looking foward to not being under my mothers control any longer but in entirety I want to leave on my own terms. Who cares about what eveyone else thinks? If they believe that I am becoming a slut because my dress is too short then that just reflects off their insecurities. When I leave, it will be on my own terms and the person I decide I want to spend the rest of my life with is going to love me for who aI really am and not this programed person she is trying to create. I think that the real motive behind mothers instructions is so that I wont have to go throught her same experience, she has given me her input on life from what she has experienced and she just wants me to be ready so that when I go out into the world I am ready to find a husband and I wont be lingering around like the slut she believes im bent on becoming.

Clarissa Dalloway Septumus Warren Smith
·       An upper-class woman

·       Wealthy family

·       She was 52 years of age.

·       A working class man

·       Psychologically damaged by WWI

·       In his 30’s.

“She had a narrow pea-stick figure; a ridiculous little face, beaked like a bird” (Woolf, 10). She also dressed well, kept herself looking together. …”pale faced, beaked nosed, wearing brown shoes and a shabby overcoat” (Woolf, 14). With a consistently apprehensive look on his face.
Views the world through the lenses of making meaning to things such as the prime minister or the queen in the car. Sees the world in a paranoid destructive view. Feels ridiculed, and made fun of. Does not feel at the same level intellectually as those around him.
Lives through the thoughts of others. Is constantly analizing what she thinks others think of her. Her interior thoughts remain inside her. Does not have the ability to focus and cannot tell reality from his visions. Believes that there is something wrong with him but others see him as being selfish. He expresses his inner thoughts to the outside world.
·       Enjoys being at home

·       Quotes Shakespear

·       Disconnect to her spouse.

·       Believes people and nature are connected (trees). A little of everyone is shown above ground and underneath is the complex roots if ones life.

·       Enjoys being at home

·       Quotes Shakespear

·       Spouse Lucrizia and him have a failure to understand each other.

·       Also believes nature binds us in a spiritual way. Death is not the end, survive through nature.

Continues to live and endure her internal struggles. Commits suicide and dies at the end, ending his suffering.

I see these two characters coming together as Virginia Woolf’s work of art because although these characters are very distinct they are also very similar. In the story you can see in the beginning that Clarissa foreshadows that something bad is going to occur which ends up being the death of Septumus. She feels very attached to him because in reality he was created by Mrs. Woolf to create a figurine of two characters with the internal struggles she personally was struggling with. By analyzing this chart that I have provided you can begin to notice some of the connecting hints that she provided for us. In real life Mrs. Virginia Woolf used to suffer from bipolar depression and had very spontaneous mood swings.  And would often depress herself in her own thoughts of what she believes people thought of her and her writing. She felt the pressures of the society around her tormenting her and ended up leaving her husband a widow by committing suicide herself and ended up drowning herself. I believe that she depicted the work of art of her life’s story through this book and depicted how we are all connected in this world and face similar challenges figuring out our own identities.

ENG 2850-KTA

The picture that I choose for this assignment was a picture illustrated by Diego Rivera in 1914 it is called Young Man in a Gray Sweater (Jacques Lipchitsz). To begin talking about this picture I would like to mention the reason why it stood out to me. The person who made the picture actually has my soon to be marriage name Rivera, seeing that in black on the bottom right hand corner automatically sparked my interest. Naturally I wanted to know more about the artist himself so that it can help me understand the picture and its meaning. Successfully I did, I learned that this type of picture is a form of cubism which is a style of abstract art. This type of art uses shapes, colors and different formats to create an illusion of an image. In this picture it happened to be a young man in a gray sweater. From the point of view where I was standing I felt  like I could see a blurred image of this character from multiple angles. The black and gray colors are spread throughout the image to make it feel more dimensional than it actually is. The colored stripes on the sides help me create a point to stop trying to piece together the shapes that construct the image of his face. The multiple dimensions also give the image a dark tone and feel. The gray crackled rectangle in the middle of the image helps me center the opposing faces. On the left side of the image it looks like the young man is making a serious and stern face with the eyebrow shadow being shown in a high arch. It also seems as if the hands fingers might have been entangled together. On the right side the face looks more relaxed. The eyebrow as well as the eye look more opened and not as tense. He also makes the right side brighter adding more shades of white to the gray colored shape in its bottom right corner.  This made me feel as if the Young man in the Gray sweater may have had a good and a bad side as many individuals do in this world that we live in. To me Diego Rivera captured that beautifully in this image, I really enjoyed looking at it.

Discourse on the logic of language & Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass

Maribel Peralta

Hybrid assignment

ENG 2850/KTA

In the Discourse on logic of language by M. Phillips there is a message being sent across to inform us about the determinability that language had on the lives of slaves. It sends a very impactful message across because as we see while reading the Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass we see how language played its part in the mystification of slavery. Back then slaves where not allowed or even taught how to read and write, this kept them oppressed and under the power of the white man. This poem is very informative in the sense that it keeps on repeating the following melodious line “English is a foreign language … anguish…father tongue”. This brought to me the idea that she might be saying this to indicate how slaves where exposed to listen and understand another language that was not originally their own. And of course they have no mother tongue because as mentioned in (Douglass, 1) “…before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it…” Stating the practice of severing that human connection between mother and child and replacing it with the brutal image of owner and property. In the poem Phillip manipulated the sounds of words making it more musical. When there is no more language to describe what it is the message is delivering she replaces words with personal information. This is also done in the novel. Before Frederick understood the language he would hear the slaves sing and it would be seen as a joyful act from the master in charge of them but after he understood he saw that this was more of a out cry for help and that these melodies revealed the deepest sentiments of the slaves. I really enjoyed when Phillips incorporated actual studies such as the one done by Dr. Broker on the size of the brain and how that proved intelligence. And how if the slave where caught speaking they would be severely punished. All of these where methods to keep institutionalizes racism in the minds of the slaveholders. By saying that because the size of the brain in African American was different there of than that of the white man it gave them the validity to his false assumptions. In (Douglass, 15) when Demby is shot in the head the excuse that was given to the slave master was also another example of the torture these slaves had to endure because of the institutionalized racism build in the system of these slaveholders. It states (Douglass, 15) “if one of the slaves refused to be corrected, and escaped with his life, the other slaves would soon copy his example; the result would be, the freedom of the slaves, and the enslavement of the whites.” This was a huge fear on behalf of the white population because the slaves did outnumber them by a lot. The detachment though from having any type of connection with anyone was really what kept him or her oppressed for so long though. I noticed this soon after I was reaching the ending of the novel, (Douglass 55) “It caused me more pain than anything else in the whole transaction. I was ready for anything rather than separation.” This message is also embodied into the message of the poem in the multiple choices that questions the use of the tongue, is it to taste, a form of speech, or an organ of oppression? I believe Frederick notice the mystification of the human language as a for to dehumanized the slave culture. When he learned to read this was a time of revelation for him that set the motion for his path to freedom.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein VS. 1994 Dir. Kenneth Branagh

I chose to pick the 1994 Dir. Kenneth Branagh’s version in contrast to Mary Shelley’s text because immediately after watching it I knew that it was not right. It presented to me an illustration completely exastrabated from that which I got from the book. The other version of the clip the 1931 version had some mistakes as well for example there where spectators there with Frankenstein as he animated life into his creature which is not true. He also used the electricity of the thunderstorms to animate his being which is inaccurate as well because Mary Shelly clearly says on page 35 in the text “I collected the instruments of life around me”. But what threw me off about this version was that it was a dark and rainy day just as stated in the book on the same page “It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle nearly burnt out..” on page 35. It had some type of similarity, which brings me back to the 1994 version that to me did not. In this clip Dr. Frankenstein looks like a healthy young man running around his laboratory turning switches. His shirt was wide open and his long curly locks of hair were swiftly moving as fast as he did all around the scene. In the text he was a miserable person. He was suffering from anxiety and had been working on this project for nearly two years. Shelly continues to mention in the first line of page 36 that he was neglecting himself of sleep and health which would depict the exact opposite of what the young man in the scene was doing. Instead we would see the scientist as a scruffy, broken down person probably moving at a very slow to moderate pace to get things done. In addition, It is true that Dr. Frankenstein was intrigued far beyond what was normal by his experiment but as soon as he got the chance to witness what he had created he was horrified. In the film this is not what is portrayed, the last words he exclaimed were “yes, yes, yes!” as if he were excited or happy about bringing his creature to life. Although in the text on page 36 Mary Shelly states “… but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.” She goes on to say how he wasn’t able to even sleep thinking of the horrible mistake he had made, he even had nightmares. In the text, Frankenstein starts to feel a very negative way about his creation immediately after it is brought to life. He feels as if he created a monster and Mary Shelly makes this clear to us in lines such as “I beheld the wretch-the miserable monster whom I created.” This in addition to not being able to sleep or feed himself appropriately made him very fatigue and debilitated so I do not understand why the young man they chose to play him had so much energy in the clip that I watched.

My Journey
26 I hear the sound I love, the sound of the human voice,
I hear all sounds running together, combined, fused or following,
Sounds of the city and sounds out of the city, sounds of the day and night, (Song of myself)

The first location on the road map of my life will always be my home. Since I am the woman of the house and I do live with my significant other it is my duty to make sure everything is kept up to standards. I love being within the confines of my walls its the best feeling, especially since Im almost never there. I wish I could spend more time at home, I would have time to develop several projects I have in mind for my living room arrangements. But when I do have the time I just want to relax, enjoy my day off with the company of the one who owns the key to my heart. When I read this line above It made me think of just sitting on my couch watching a movie like I usually do while the neighbors barbecued in the house in front of us. You could hear laughter, kids running, jumping, screaming, music playing. But still I feel at peace because I know in safe and comfortable exactly were I want to be.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. (Genesis)

The second location is like my second home. If I’m not in my house then I will most likely be here. It’s the location of were I work, although my tittle is a part-time sales associate the hours I get are more like full time. On my part I give it my 150% effort while I’m on the clock so my work is more at a management level. Even if I wanted to become a full time worker I wouldn’t be able to just yet either because of all the other day to day things I’m associated I still don’t have a set schedule. I choose the quote above because I feel like it best describes what we have to do in order to survive. We have to work with what we have and make it work in other words. We are given the opportunity we just have to cease it.

23 I accept Reality and dare not question it, Materialism first and last imbuing. (Song of myself)

Last but not least my third location is the college that I am in today, Baruch college. I choose this location because it is where I am spending the third largest portion of my time at. I was originally going to choose the place where I came from as a transfer student BMCC but I haven’t been there ever since I received my diploma. Although I learned a lot from there and I left being a bigger and better person I know that my progress will only improve in this environment I am in now. I choose this quote because I accept that certain things are meant to be a certain way and I don’t question it and that’s how I feel about school. I don’t know if it’s because my mom brought me up that way, but she didn’t care what type of weather it was if I had to go i was going. And school can only benefit you, inspire your ideas and interests.
