Valdez Enterprises is one of the top multi-service business agencies in the Washington Heights, New York City area.

Today, owner Jose Valdez shares what he looks for when hiring new accountants and staff for his business, as well as tips for our readers.

“We get resumes here all the time… I hope that my advice can help someone out there as they apply for their desired position,” says Jose Valdez.

1. Resume Bullet Points
Writing a resume can be a tricky task, especially when trying to condense your work experience into a single bullet. When speaking about what he wants to see on a resume, Jose Valdez says:  “make sure each bullet point on your resume in the ‘Work Experience’ section showcases what you specifically brought to the previous company you worked for.” This means that as an applicant, if you specifically worked on planning an event at a PR firm, you want to include exactly what your role was, what the event’s outcome was, and any other detail that expresses how you contributed. Remember to give specifics!

2. Tell The Recruiter Your Story
“Recruiters know nothing about your life, or history…the only introduction we get to you is from your resume” says Valdez. So, if you’ve made it to the in-person interview portion of the job, (WOOHOO!) remember to share a little about yourself, and let your personality shine through so that the recruiter can learn a few things about you after interacting!

3. Present Yourself As A Brand
From being polite to the front desk receptionist, to the outfit you are wearing for your interview, make sure you’re presenting yourself in the best manner possible. “From the minute you walk into my office, I’m looking to see if you will be a good fit for my company,” says Valdez. This shows how important thinking about yourself as a brand is when applying for jobs.

4. Experience Over GPA
“I want to see what your work experience in the real world is,” shares Valdez. “A GPA or Academic Achievements are not the most important feature I look for in a resume.” Keep in mind that recruiters look for how you will integrate yourself into their team, and a 3.68 GPA will be irrelevant if you have zero work experience! 5. Speaking A Second Language
If English was not your first language, then this one is for you! “Speaking another language is an extremely valuable skill,” comments Valdez. In a sea of applicants, knowing another language allows you to stand out from the rest!
