(3) Observation Exercise

  • Issues in transportation (got a ticket, determining to take public transport the next day)
  • Time management problems (not enough time to settle in from work to eat and take class)
  • Spacial complications (shared room space means one party must sacrifice, lack of privacy)
  • Attention issues (various distractions from devices to external conversations)
  • Inability to wind down

For this assignment, I decided to observe my sister for an hour after she came home from work. Apparently I was lucky enough to observe her on a day that was quite hectic and there was much complaining on her end, in which I could derive a couple key issues she experiences in her daily life. I believe a key issue she had to deal with was in transportation; she had gotten a ticket that day and delays in finding parking led to her getting home later than expected. That ushered another one of her key issues, time management. There was not enough time for her to settle in, have a meal, and prepare for her online Zoom course. Another problem that arose was issues with space because we do share a room so there are constant issues with deciding who gets the space when, privacy issues, etc. My biggest takeaway from this exercise is that most of our day to day problems are interconnected in some way and finding a solution to one problem can be helpful in stopping the domino effect.
