Pitch-Story #2
Tianwen NO.1 detector landing on Mars is a popular topic in October in China. I would like to write about this subject for my second paper topic.
At 23:00 on October 9th, 2020, China’s Fly Group first completed the mission of probing Mars. Tianwen NO.1’s engine had fired for 480 seconds and successfully launched into space. This deep space track mechanic mission worked about twenty-nine million four hundred thousand meters away from the earth. The most incredible part of the Tianwen NO.1 Mars probe mission is that it took just one try to probe, land , and make a circuit with three programs. The achievement is unprecedented progression of human beings detecting the universe. Human beings had attempted Mars probing 44 times prior, but only 19 were successful; partial success happened 23 times. So, Mars was called “detector tomb”. Tianwen NO.1 also has overcome this problem. This great success on Mars has been one more giant leap for mankind.
For this fresh and interesting topic, I will do abundant research to find more details of the mission and behind story. Meanwhile, America had a similar plan for probing Mars before China complete the task in 2020. To find the reason why America postpone the original plan more than a few months is another point to write in the paper.
First story: A new economy strategy is being enforced for covering business loss in China.
Asynchronous Assignment 10/14
The third committee, virtual informal-General assembly, 75th session was held on October 14. The topic on the virtual meeting was human right for all people in the world in the coronavirus pandemic. I attended the meeting was on 10:00 am. When I opened the website, there was an old lady hosted the meeting. She was the one in charge of the conference for all programs worked well. The first section was promotion and protection of human rights. The commissioner proclaimed a long speech of promoting human rights in every region of people, especially in Africa areas. Ethiopia, Congo, Zambia, Kenya and the Sudan are the highly attention countries implementing prevent the Covid-19 spread rapidly. Meanwhile, the committee recalled the countries with poorly sanitary environment have to put the pandemic as the first thing to do. Gypsies are still not have fully human rights now, and this is a urgent issue have to take action because the pandemic would be a threat to people who don’t live with human rights. The committee had planed many projects to do for next steps. They also advice to some regions promoting human rights and live safety during the pandemic is the most important thing.
The second section was every commissioner who represents their countries had two and half minutes to report the current circumstances of human rights and the following plan to the next year for their countries.
The Rough Draft of the Story
Photoville: “Visual Narrative and Your Story”
I am thankful that Photoville offered me a chance to know how to be a professional narrative photography journalist. On Sep 27, I attended “Visual Narrative and Your Story” online meeting. Lauren Steel and Shannon Simon were teaching useful tips for being a professional photograph journalist, such as to recommend your works to the editor for a better chance to publish. Beginner journalists interested in publishing their works in magazines have to contact editors beforehand. Many of them only email pictures with additional description to editors while there are hundreds of pictures waiting. Editors obviously have no time to email you back if your work is not special enough. Thus, introduce your work with points to attract their attention, like punchy captions, accurate subjects, and detailed research about the magazine you email.
Lauren Steel is an editor who works for The New York Times. She also freelances for The New York Times Magazine. She has worked on preparation of photographs published in newspapers and magazines for ten years. She brought two important question to all of us which were what the theme of your work is and what is the point that people could find in your work. These two questions would extend a couple of other questions: are you passionate about your work and why do you think shot this is important. Lauren suggests us to think about all sides of the story and completely explain them before sending it to editor. This goes for exhibitions as well.
Here are three details she explained in the meeting:
1. Caption: To explain to viewers but it depends on your work if you prefer not to make a title. The caption is usually one or two sentences at least.
2. Research: Once you chose a subject to shoot, researching the background and peripheral information is necessary. Sometimes, a subject might take a year or longer.
3. The type of magazine: Not every magazine accepts journalism photographs. For instance, fashion magazines are not interested in journalistic photographs. Choosing a proper type of magazine before contacting the editor is important. You also need to know the rule of the magazine which you decide to work with very well. For example, if the food magazine only publishes one theme picture in the first inner page, but you were making six more pictures, the editor would not make yours the first choice.
If you don’t know any editors but would like to publish your work, you can look for agencies, scan AP, check social media or research newspaper editors online. The most convenient way is using LinkedIn, a personal website, or an online portfolio to save particular works in.
I had learned a lot in this exhibition meeting, which helps photo journalists open the door to begin the first step of publishing.
Here are some pictures shown in the meeting by Zoom.
Pitch #1
To Jack Mealy, the New York Times Breaking News Editor:
Good morning Jack. I’m a journalism student at Baruch College. Here is a topic about stimulate economy under the coronavirus pandemic in China. Since I returned to China and found this interesting topic that I would like to report it as the feature news. I think I can do better interviews because I truly see the difference of private venders selling products between Covid-19 pandemic and before in reality. Hopefully this topic could be a great topic to be reported to get more attention to the busines experts.
The Covid-19 economy crisis has ravaged marketing since January outbreak in China. Three months since it emerged, the government has effectively managed the virus and has it under control. Yet economy has been destroyed badly and business such as tourism, catering, entertainment and malls were closed completely during the Spring festival. This factor will become a burden, which will postpone the business returning back to the right track. Therefore, a new policy was made by the National Culture Administration for recovering economy in the shortest time. According to the rule of retail private business, street vendor selling products is legal in the period of Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The National Culture City Agency evaluated data and announced street, curb market and fluidity vendors were found eligible to be added to the business policy in 2020. The Chinese chairman Mr. Xi used the National People’s Congress and Chinese Political Consultative Conference to proclaim and enforce stimulating economic policies, extremely reducing business loss in Covid-19 pandemic. Now, large cities have opened street vendor business throughout the day in different periods. Meanwhile, the city management guards would protect and maintain private stalls to be safe while doing their business on the street.
Mrs. Zexi Ning is a community leader who works at the city building council. She is in charge of Tei Xi zone Ying Chang community. Currently, she is busy handling with citizens returning to the community abroad with seven days quarantine. About street vendor policy, she said a few of townspeople had asked her if opened the private busines need sign a contract or not. They are readily to sign a paper that protect their stalls not to be molested. She demonstrated that before the virus outbreak, street vendors were prohibited and invalided to the city civilization. Since the new polity enforced that some of the people who had vendor experience may start with private busines without contracts. She also said to prevent virus recurrent in fall is the most important thing for now. Every week the community can receive two or three citizens aboard back to the community. What she needs to do is tracing the people follow the seven days quarantine at home (after 14 quarantine in hotel).
The street vendors have two kinds way to do, which are congregate selling and self-stall. The congregation is usually selling snacks and small dishes in the evening and the other one is selling clothes in the morning. Mrs. Juanhua Liu is a fifty-six-year-old private stall owner. She drives her mini-van with clothes to the main street of Nan Shi middle road every afternoon. Selling on the street is not hard to do because she had been selling kids clothes in market for a few years. Because of coronavirus was spread fast, she had to shut her business down immediately. In three months no income so that she has to take her clothes selling on the street. She was happy to hear about the government released a new policy for small business to cover the loss for individual business owners such like her. Before she put her products on the side curb, she was wondering if people judged her or not. Afterward, she saw many private sellers sold their products with no troubles then she decided to do her business on the street. She also said, selling in the market needs to pay rent for individual stall while street selling is much easier than that. Whether she goes home either early or late, it depends on her. So she was thankful the new rule that give her a second chance to earn money like before.
This report will write about the new policy for relief private business’ financial burden. From the community leader Mrs. Ning to self-stall Mrs. Liu, based on their work and current circumstance to analyze how important the new economy policy for individual sellers and general increase the marketing rate. The news backdrop is happened in ShenYang City of Liao Ning Province in China. I will introduce the background is under the Covid-19 and then focused on Mrs. Ning to talk about what the new policy is and what the impact to the people. I also will put more length on Mrs. Liu to talk about more her comment and benefit for her business.
Best,
Tao Zhang.
The Beat Memo: Chinese stimulate economy policy in pandemic crisis
How many live in China? In the tristate area? How many in the home country?
China has the most populations in the world. According to the national census on January 17th 2020, Chinese who lived in as permanent citizens are one billion four hundred and five million. The three major cities in China is held the largest numbers of people which is Beijing is twenty-one million five hundred and thirty thousand; Shanghai is twenty-four million two hundred and eighty thousand and Guangdong is fifteen million and three hundred thousand. My hometown Shenyang is a provincial capital in Liao Ning province with eight million and six hundred thousand.
In the tristate area, where do they live?
Most people in the major city of China usually live in city but not rural. The countryside is only a small amount of people and rural around the city as the policy of China has been enforced since the country established in 1949.
What jobs do a significant percentage of them have?
People who lived in Shenyang worked in various jobs such as business, technology, marketing and services. In lately years, the seniors have been increasing rapidly because over sixty years old were retired. They have much recreational time to spend in park and spa. However, many young people are looking for a job with good compensation and insurance. They prefer to go other provinces or go abroad to pursue a better life.
What are some major organizations/ advocacy groups/ resources in this community?
The community counsel is a major organization in very community. With my project that I would like to interview the community leader who in charged my house area. She knows the economy policy during the COVID-19 very well. If she wouldn’t be recorded, I could quote her phrases. Another part is interviewing a stall on street. There are so many private stalls sell food on the street. Clothes sellers working in the morning and food seller in the evening.
How strong are relationships with the home country? How significant are remittances to the home country’s economy?
Basically, every provincial capital held the superior position that leads economy strong in order to connect a good relationship with other city in the province. People move to the provincial capital for better personal income. Older people return to peripheral cities retire so that remittances in provincial capital like Shenyang are always higher than other cities.
In the homeland what is the GDP per capita?
In 2019, the GDP of Shenyang is six hundred and forty-seven billion. Increasing three million in 2018. To evaluate the general GDP in China, it is average above others.
The city where I would like to report named Shen Yang with eight million six hundred populations. The state enterprises are more than private company. In recent years, rural population move to the city for opening private business. The retailers keep increasing and fully covered the major city. When COVID-19 suddenly outbreak in China, Shen Yang as a major big city that shut down the economy immediately. After three months later, the virus slowly spread and almost under control. The government made a new plan in order to cover the loss for those private retailers. I would like to interview a street stall owner to get specific information about the new policy for private business. I may use photographs in report to present it vividly. I also have a plan to interview the community leader. If she didn’t want to be recorded, I would phrase and quoted what she said then use it appropriately.
- Interviewing community leader about the new economy policy and if it is stimulated economy might resurge to the last year.
- To general introduce the background of marketing and compare pervious years. Make a contrast the difference between the normal economy and COVID-19 period.
- Taking photos of street stalls. Recording their working moments and interview one of stall owner to get more details about new policy worked for private business.
Assignment#1: The new policies of China during the pandemic crisis
For this semester, I would like to report current news about policy in China after the coronavirus outbreak at the head of 2020. China as the first COVID-19 outbreak country and the fastest hold the virus continues spreading. There are some of policies were declared after the virus were controlled effectively. I had arrived Shen Yang in China before I completed spring session. I am able to offering reliable sources in order to report the last news and presents circumstance of China now.
Many countries have been struggling with coronavirus and the death toll of all global is over eight hundred thousand people since January. Some of countries had passed the urge infection and started the next step to cover the lose during the pandemic. China is the one that find the way to recover the economy as much as they can. I’ll use online sources and databases to be references which write in the report to present what is being happened during the COVID-19 in 2020.
China has already passed the toughest time of coronavirus and focusing on developed economy might backed to the level of the last year. Moreover, students are going back to school in September with effective method to prevent virus recurrent again. This topic would be the one which people are concerned about international news and also I have ability to report it well. I would like to interview people who lived in my community and stalls to get their opinions of the pandemic crisis. I also have plan to interview some education agents for collecting materials under the COVIE-19 then using for the report.
