Summary
The country I'd like to cover throughout the semester would be the Dominican Republic. Both sides of my family originate from there and being a first generation born American, I'd enjoy being able to use this as an opportunity to not only to expand my learning of the current political and social climate of the nation, but also to see how views as a Dominican American contrast to those who are native. I know over the last 20 the economy has risen a lot because of tourism, but I've seen a lot of videos about how many workers at these resorts get abused and exploited by their employers and the wealthy people who come to visit., and this is something I'd like to possibly dive into. The tension between the country and the neighboring Hati is also something I'd like to investigate more into. I've read about Dominican politicians attempting to change laws to make it harder to Haitian immigrants to come over as well as making it harder for them to become citizens. Theirs also high level of abuse that many Haitians in the Dominican Republic see, and I'd like to investigate the history of the tensions and the see where things are going.
