International Security Course–Fall 2020

The US must support Sudan’s path to Democracy

For the last three decades Bahir’s government drowned Sudan into a dictatorship, after Sudan’s former President, Omar Hassan al-Bashir fell from the power in 2019, Sudan is moving forward through a transitional democracy process, planning to win democratic election in 2022, during present period they have been looking restauration of freedom of the assembly, press and speech, but in fact is not an easy way for Sudanese people who have been dealing with many difficult issues amid the post-Bashir period, such as Sudanese military’s abuses to Covid-19. Regarding the Sudan’s goal to aim democracy path; it needs urgent measures to strengthen their weak economy, improve international relationship and gain support from the US and others influence countries.

Nowadays Sudan is struggling with the one the biggest obstacles to recover their economy, due to sanctions imposed in 1993 from Washington aimed at punishment during Bahir’s government when the US labeled Sudan at state sponsor of terrorism and supported Osama Bin Laden. In 2020 Trump’s government have approached to the issue disregarding the significant ways in which Sudan has changed its policies both domestically and internationally, trying to make a quid pro quo deal with Khartoum where Trump required from them normalize relations with the Jewish state in exchange to remove Sudan from the State Sponsor of terrorism (SST) list.

Sudan’s economic situation and COVID-19 crisis has affected the country’s movement towards democracy, in the present they are stuck into the Trump’s government inertia to make a decision from Washington to remove them from the SST list, allowing Sudan’s economy to increase by trading also giving to Sudanese civil society an opportunity to regrow after being harshly oppressed under Bashir’s rule.

Trump’s Failure in the Middle East

For decades the United Stated has struggled to avoid potential nuclear weapon attacks from Middle East; Obama’s government, was engaged tried an approach to listen and keep peace with these countries establishing deals or sanctions such as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but these undergo a different treatment under Trump’s administration. Last month Iran decided to violate the sanctions imposed under JPCOA in part due to Trump’s regime imposing highest pressure on the Country undermining human rights, push down their economy, brought unemployment, poverty, hunger, shortage of medicines, to an almost near collapse. Trump paid no attention to NATO, and disregard all policies and protocols in international security, refusing to make joint efforts therefore diminishing America’s power and influence, indeed Trump’s behavior is arbitrary and threating over Middle east have alienated allied countries such as Germany, Britain, France that don’t support any unilateral decisions in international affairs from Trump’s government.

On the other hand, Trump keeps pursuing goal that not necessarily benefit America’s position on the word, dealing arms with Saudi Arabia, spending a lot of billions of dollars and putting pressure to sell F-35 stealth fighters and advanced armed drones to the United Arab Emirates. Besides the peace deal, went down after Trump attempted to change “land for peace” deal with “money for peace”, in Palestine, but Palestinians did not follow his play and rejected his proposal. Moreover, remarkable failures like Libya’s current situation who is in the midst of a civil war, Egypt going down with military dictator, Yemen in a humanitarian disaster among others, all these latest events highlighted Trump’s lack of strategy absence of moral compass and failure of leadership have damaged America’s prestige.

Look into terrorism 19 years after 9/11

9/11 attacks tear apart the national security of the United States and indubitably split its  national security’s history in two eras; in post 9/11 homeland moved forward swiftly in order to restructure security affairs, law enforcement and intelligent services, during this period the U.S. has been shifting their fear for strength. Nowadays the U.S. has demonstrated capability to curb terrorist attacks as a result of enormous investments and improvements in intelligence, spent billions of dollars in security measures and offensive actions, military financial, cyber and other against terrorist attacks, those actions are really necessary from the government to offer safe and peace in some way for people, who remained 9/11 attacks with sorrow and outrage.

Despite of terrorist groups such as Isis and Al-Qaeda have lost their territory and have struggled during these years to bring back their warfare, new ways of terrorist attacks have been developing thus new concerns came up for homeland, and once again the U.S. must reinvent itself in how to fight against cyber-attacks, nuclear and biological weapons also devastating technologies that anyone can access so easy, unfortunately greatest advance in technology have seen how insane minds are using this valuable tool hurting international security around the world, maybe is a good moment to analyze which is the best way to take away this unfair warfare.

Currently the world has advance technological weapons, air drones, even there are already artificial intelligence, always creating new ways of destroy and keeping in wars that just bring poverty, deaths, starving and broken economies for major countries, what is coming up after that?  why mankind since its creation only matter how to destroy others? when this preposterous warfare is going to go to the end?

U.S. National Sovereignty and International Security: unilateralism vs. multilateralism

While, in the midst of everything around the world aims to globalization, political issues between states held systems such as unilateralism vs multilateralism in international relationships, based on opposite premises, whereas unilateralism find its fundaments on individualism and sovereignty struggling to keep a country like a “great power”, disregarding and sometimes undermining other states’ interests. On the other hand multilateralism more kindly has found its fundaments in altruistic ideology, involving communities in highly cooperation in order to set up accords and international laws to promote solutions for troubles that are affecting to everybody around the world like global warming, nuclear weapons, trade war, tensions in the gulf or other humanitarian crisis.

For centuries mankind has been involved in several wars, where leaders of most of the countries have fought for sovereignty and power, countries such as Russia, China and the U.S has struggled to gain more and more power. Nevertheless, after Cold war Governments around the globe have realized that situation has brought poverty and dropped down their economies, throughout decades most of the governments have seen the importance to support to each other, and is the perfect timing when multilateralism plays an important and strong role in international relationships, bringing wide accomplishments in international trade, developing technology, investments then strengthens countries’ economies, encourages all states to the era of globalization.

Nowadays real world shows that multilateralism is under risk due to Trump’s government is taking advantage from unilateralism, exacerbating its policies in sovereignty and self-defense, argue policies like cooperating with other states could be hurt American jobs or the U.S. economy, putting away Paris climate accord, the Iran nuclear deal, the trade war with China and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, his actions could put under risk international security also bring negatives political changes for the country impacting economies’ issues, increasing costs, country’s investment, among other side effects, certainly is time to think if unilateralism is the correct way to lead a country even when that selfish ideology affecting other states, I was wondering what is going to happen when the U.S need support from others?
