Research Reflection- What Study Habits Work Best?

  • I wish to explore the topic of study habits and what study habit in general works best for people. Specifically, I will be looking at the difference between studying notes everyday from the time of the lecture to the exam versus studying the notes in depth and vigorously a few days leading up to the exam.
  • I am looking to manipulate when students will have access to their notes to study by allowing the first half of students chosen to study the notes from the time they took them to the time of the exam while the other half will have no access to these notes until 2 days before the test.
  • An Experimental design would serve best for my research question.
  • I would use an experiment in my research design because I will be assigning people to different groups and observing how the differing independent variable (study periods) will affect their outcome on an exam.
  • The Independent variable would be when the subjects are told to study and the Dependent variable will be their grads on the exam.
  • I think that studying everyday leading up to the test a small amount each day will lead to the higher test scores because as we learned in the memory chapter, when we learn things they are freshest in our mind directly after we hear them.
  • Students will have definitive proof as to what study method is proven to work better and thus can implement that into their routine in order to do better on their exams.
  • I felt like the hardest part of this was actually choosing a topic and research question to explore. Once I got past that I felt like everything just came naturally.
