What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design? Does having a pet increase the owner’s lifespan?
What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate? The lifespan of a pet owner.
What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc) A correlational design will best suit this experiment.
What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)A survey will be used to conduct the experiment.
If applicable, what would you put as your independent and dependent variables? The independent variable will be the whether or not someone has a pet(s) and the dependent variable will be the person’s current or full lifespan.
Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find. I predict that pet owners will have a longer lifespan on average that non pet owners.
What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it? Non owners will have more of an incentive to have pets, therefore benefiting animal adoption agencies as well as current pet owners.
Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?
There can be some trouble defining what a pet is? A pet is usually defined as an animal companion. But companionship can be difficult to measure. Some people decide to keep dogs and cats. While others decide to keep more exotic pets such as scorpions, spiders, snakes, etc. Furthermore there are some pets that are easily capable of inflicting fatal damage to their owners. For example, the owners of alligators are placing themselves and their families in a high risk of danger. Some owners may feel unmotivated to complete the survey, therefore the results may be not be an accurate sample of the population.
