So I’ve heard many people say things like, “I always fall asleep listening to my ipod,” or “I can’t fall asleep without listening to music.” Therefore my question is, “Does it really help people fall asleep better/faster or does it actually put them into a more tranquil mood/state of mind which allows people to fall asleep more easily?”
I’m sort of having a hard time which category this “experiment” would fall into, I don’t know whether it would be experimental or correlational because my idea is two take two groups of 10 from lets say this psych class and bring them into a lab setting set up with a bed and night time lighting in which the experimental group would have their ipod and would attempt to fall asleep as they normally would, while the control group would simply lie down with no ipod and fall asleep on their own. From the moment each person would lie down I would starting recording how long it takes for them to actually fall asleep, and once they have I’d record the amount of time it takes for them to fall asleep. Here the independent variable would be the ipod and minutes it takes to fall asleep would be dependent on whether or not they have the ipod so that would make it the dependent variable. My reason as to why I think it may be a correlational study is because this study is finding trying to find whether there is a correlation between listening to music and falling asleep faster.
My hypothesis would be that the group with no ipods would fall asleep faster, I have several reasons for my hypothesis: 1) because most music will stimulate your brain and get you into the music to the point where you become awake and excited because of the beat for example, and 2) because everyone knows that when they are listening to their ipod on shuffle, you always end up skipping and skipping songs so that definitely would disturb the process of trying to fall asleep.
As far as who would gain from it probably everyone who makes it a habit of listening to music before going to sleep. However no matter what the results are people, may continue this habit simply because they have become accustomed to it.
Something that may affect the outcome of this experiment would be a confounding variable. Certain types of music even if it’s upbeat may actually prove to tranquilize and put someone at ease simply because they may listen to that music so often. If this is the case, then someone listening to music may fall asleep at the same time as someone who is in the control group (the group with no ipods).
So I think thats about it, I’d definitely like feedback on this especially because I want to figure out what group this would fall in correlational vs. experimental.
