MEDITATION 101

A. First, take note of the moods you’ve experienced.

Right now I am exhausted and happy. I’m usually relaxed but when I think about all my school work I begin to feel a little stressed.

B.   Assess your overall level of anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10.

My overall level of anxiety is 2.5

C.   Assess the level of physical tension in your body- where do you notice the tension? Try rating your overall tension on a scale of 1 to 10.

My level of physical tension is 3.5 because I have pain in my legs from my shoes

III. After you have finished your meditation, re-asses your state of mind and body.

A.   Reassess your mood on the chart.

After the meditation, I felt more relaxed and “light”

B.   Reassess your level of anxiety from 1 to 10.

My anxiety level is 1

C.   Reassess your level of physical tension and rate it from 1 to 10.

My physical tension level is now a 2

IV. Describe the experience– What type of meditation did you choose? Describe what was going on in your mind and your body, what kind of thoughts and sensations did you experience during the meditation? Were there any challenging or frustrating aspects of the experience, and if so, what were they? Would you try this again in the future? Why or why not?

I chose the Guided Meditation in the heat. Personally I like hot yoga, and the feeling of sweating. After hot yoga, and now likewise with this, I felt like a weight was lifted and I now feel much “lighter”. The frustrating part of it was at points I lost focus and though too much on how hot the room was and how I wanted a drink of water, but I would quickly refocus myself on what I was doing. I’d definitely try this again in the future. I think it’s a great way to clear your mind, body, and soul!

Shalom! Ma – Nishma

Achim Sheli,

How are you. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Natanel Matan Shoshani. I recently got married B’H and I moved into NYC on the Upper West side. My wife and I are both from NY and we me in High school. Yes, getting married is not easy! But, i do believe it is the greatest move I had ever made in my life. Anyway,  I am currently a Junior at Baruch College, and i hope to graduate in the next 2 years. Psychology was not my favorite subject last year and thats because I was not serious in class. Anyway, Im happy to be your student and I am looking forward for a great semester. BTW Achim sheli are two hebrew words that mean “My brothers and sisters”. I wish that everyone will have a great semester and will really enjoy this class. Take it seriously Trust Me. All the Best. Shabbat Shalom.

"Hi, I read your "Retracting the Steps". I really liked your ideas on how to try to retrieve your memory. Once I read the assignment I thought about pictures and old stories. If I was your longtime friend it would be extremely hard for me to be around you and know that your have absolutely no idea who i am. Fortunetely, I would work hard to re-build your memory so we can start a new friendship. Regarding - Lily Tam's comment I agree with her that it might be nice to delete some bad memories. I would choose to only remember some, but not all. I do believe that one grows and stregthens from ones mistakes and bad memories. Good Luck"

"Most people are not such great multi-tasks. I believe that it also depends on your professor and the subject your learning. If one is interested in a certain subject and a professor motivates him to listen. That student would not be so interested in the laptop in front of him. Today, it is harder for people to focus in class when they have a laptop infront of them, which gives them the opportunity to search any subject they are interested in. I believe that there would be acouple students that will have higher grades, but most students grades will decrease when they are in class with a laptop."

"Mr. Chang, I believe this is a great experiment. However, I do believe that it would be tough to gather the amount of hours a person sleeps at night. Also maybe you should change "hospital visits" to "doctor visits". Usually people only end up at the Hospital for emergency reasons. I like the idea, I would be very interested to find out the results. Ofcourse, if someone is in the hospital the chances that he would focus on school work wont be so high. Ones health is more important than ones school work. My hypothesis would be " Someone who is healthy and has a 8+ hours of sleep would do much better in school, then a person who has poor sleep, and visits the doctor on a normal basis due to a certain sickness. Great Idea."
