What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design?
- Do students who are in a relationship (have a boyfriend, husband, girlfriend, or wife) during college have lower grades than students who remain single throughout college?
What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate?
- I am looking to observe the academic performance of students in both groups (i.e. their GPA).
What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc)
- A correlational study would best suit my research question.
What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)
- I would use a survey to ask students about their relationship status and their GPA.
Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find.
- Students who remain single throughout the duration of their college career will perform better academically and will have a higher GPA.
What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it?
- The results from this study may help both students who are or are not in a relationship re-evaluate their priorities (i.e. If the study shows that single students do better than students in relationships, then those students in relationships may reconsider being in one if they worry about the consequences of remaining in a relationship).
Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?
- One possible challenge I can imagine being conflicted with is students being reluctant to tell the truth in the survey. Students in a relationship may say they have a higher GPA than they really do have because they do not want to blame their relationship on their grades.

My name is Syeda Tina Hussain (but I usually just go by Tina) and I am currently a sophomore. I intend to major in Operations Management, but we’ll see how that goes! However, I do know that I will definitely be minoring in Psychology. I am a Freshman Seminar Peer Mentor, which is a part of T.E.A.M. Baruch, I am involved with USG, and I am also the secretary of the Collegiate Association of Women in Business. I’m spearheading WIB’s Annual Dress for Success Fashion Show so I am super excited for this semester!
I’m actually blogging when I should be studying for tomorrow’s (well now, today’s…) psychology exam. I wish you all the best of luck!
See you around!

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level?
On a physiological level, Yanwang was having a hard time focusing on the meditation because they were distracted by their thoughts and surroundings. It was hard for Yanwang to clear their mind and head of thoughts because they had so much work to get back to and that's all they were thinking about.
2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation?
This meditation required Yanwang to keep their back straight, which directly effects their spinal cord. The work that the sympathetic nervous system had to do was lessened which then energized the parasympathetic nervous system. As a result, Yanwang felt their mind was "empty" and felt fresh.
3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience?
Yanwang, why was it so difficult for you to focus on the meditation? You had an allotted time to meditate and I'm surprised that even though it was something you had to do, you were still worrying about everything else you had to get back to. Your life sounds stressful and I think you can benefit from meditating more often. Do you think you will try this out again?
4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise?
I would definitely try to do the same meditation exercise. I, too, am extremely stressed out at the moment and I am curious to see why the meditation did not do much for Yanwang. I'd like to see if I can forget my problems for 2o minutes or if it will be just as difficult for me as it was for Yanwang."

How have you been? Long time no see! It's me, Tina. You probably don't remember me because you met me while you were on vacation in Toronto. I'm am surprised to learn that you do not want to remember the events that occurred while on vacation, even though you claim you weren't yourself. I'm also surprised that there are so many aspects of your past life that you want to forget. Aren't all of these things what make you who you are today (or would have been if you hadn't got hit in the head by a hockey puck)? I have to add that just because you lose your memory doesn't mean that you will completely stop thinking about "the real emotional experiences" in your life. You will still come across times where you have to deal with your emotions, regardless of whether or not they are emotional responses to things that happened in the past or present.
I must admit that I am hurt you do not want to remember me. We've grown close since your vacation in Toronto and I consider you a good friend. Although every day in Toronto was not as you expected, you still made memories that make you who you are. Everything that happened in Toronto plays a role in your life today, and all for the better. After experiencing everything that happened in Toronto, you now know what kinds of things you want to avoid. Had it not been for your vacation in Canada, you would never know this until you experienced a similar event again.
I think I will try to help you reconstruct your memory - even though you do not want to remember what happened in Toronto and you want to avoid the city. I truly believe that you can change your present life for the better if you know what happened in Toronto. I'll show you some pictures and videos I took while you were in Toronto. I actually have quite a lot of footage of some very interesting times. And who knows? Maybe you'll find the things that happened back then to be funny or interesting.
I will definitely be using all techniques when trying to help you reintegrate your memories. I will show you the pictures and videos you have so that you can encode your memories. I will help you with consolidation by going over exactly what happened when the pictures were taken, and before and after the pictures were taken. Lastly, I will help you with retrieval every step of the way because I am certain there are still a few things you remember but you are just pushing them far back into your memory so they don't reach the surface.
I hope we can meet up soon to help you remember!"

Hope this semester is treating you well. Do you want to bring some pastries to class one day? Maybe not for every one of the 300+ students, but at least for me? :)"
