Hello!

Hi everyone, my name is Sharmin Pala. I was born in Bangladesh and moved to New York when I was three years old. I am currently a sophomore here at Baruch and I plan to double major in economics and mathematics.

Some of my interests include traveling, listening to music, biking, painting, and reading a good book once in a while (although I should read more often).

My favorite classes thus far have been English and history. Currently, I really like my microeconomics and Japanese classes. I write for the opinions section of The Ticker at times and copy edit occasionally. I am also hoping to get more involved in school activities this semester.

Something about me: I really like anything that has to do with water. But unlike most people who love the beaches in the summer, I actually like them more in the fall or winter. I guess they look more peaceful at that time of the year.

Here are pictures:

"I by mistake clicked submit before I answered the questions in my previous comment...sorry. 1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding? I completely agree with your decision to keep all of your memories - whether they are positive or negative. It is true that without the negative memories, one cannot realize the happiness of the other memories and vice versa. In order to really experience happiness or sadness, one needs both kinds of memories. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? At first, I would probably feel really upset and sad that one of my friends did not remember me. However, instead of feeling upset, I have to realize that it is not my friend’s fault for not remembering me. Also, instead of negative thoughts, I must think positively and hope that one day my friend regains all of his or her memories and remembers me. 3. What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I would like to play an important role in helping my friend recover his or her memories. It will be helpful for my friend if I answer any questions he or she might have honestly in order to not confuse him or her. It would also be helpful to add in emotions and feelings to the memories instead of just describing the facts of the memories. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? One of the techniques I would use or teach is going back to the past. For example, I would take my friend back to a place that we went to together and hope he or she recovers the memories about that place. I would also try to act out any important events or conversations that took place between us and see if he or she remembers anything."

"-- What would be your hypothesis of the study’s outcome? My hypothesis would be the same as yours. Students who eat breakfast every morning will perform better on exams than those students who do not. -- What suggestions do you have for the researcher on how to improve or adjust the proposed study? The procedure for this experiment is very good. However, the mentioned statement that people are not as willing to take part in surveys can lead to difficulties. Therefore, a suggestion would be to give out incentives in order to have more participants. For example, Baruch College offers certain credit hours for participating in an experiment and this gives the student the incentive to complete the survey in order to do well in his/her class. Incentives would be helpful because everyone responds to them in one form or another. -- Are there any drawbacks or potential harmful impacts of this research design (or results?) Although there are no potential harmful impacts of this research design to either the people conducting the experiment or to those participating in the experiment, there are a few drawbacks. One of the drawbacks was already mentioned. People are not inclined to take part in surveys, which makes such an experiment difficult to go about. Another drawback is that some people do not honestly complete the survey and therefore, the results are not as accurate. -- What would be the NEXT STEP after this hypothetical research study were conducted and presented to the public? Can you propose a replication with a good twist? That’s often how research works and how the field is able to advance. Maybe you can think up a great Follow Up study! A replication or a follow up of this study can be to have three experimental groups. One would be a group which does not eat breakfast, another would be a group which eats a well-balanced breakfast, and the last group would eat breakfast that is not nutritional. After observing the patterns of the participants for a few weeks, each participant then takes an exam. The results from each of the groups should be compared to see which group performed better on the exam. The conclusion would determine whether or not the effect of eating breakfast has any correlational with the results of the exam."

"Hi Junko! I really enjoyed reading your blog entry. And I have to say, your hobbies are very interesting. If there is no ocean in your prefecture, where did you learn to scuba dive? I have always wanted to visit Japan and am currently taking a Japanese language course. Do you have any advice on how to improve in Japanese (I am a beginner...)? Anyway, it was nice to know a little something about you. And best wishes for a successful semester. :)"
