Research: Should the language barrier affect Student’s Grade

As a non-natural English Speaker, people usually faces a lot of challenges  when they just started their new life in an English country. There are many students who are not the natural English speaker in the CUNY system. Some of them come from new immigrated families; some of them are international students. The first problem when they started the college life should be the language barrier. Those barriers include reading, writing, and communication. The different kinds of student have the different barriers. Through the research study, we will explore: “Should the language barrier affect student’s Grade?  If yes, it is positive or negative?”

In the research, we assigned two groups of people who attend the same lecture at the same time. One group is the students who are the natural English speakers. Another Group is the students who are non-natural English speaker. By the end of the lecture, we give two groups the same quiz regarding the lecture. The natural languages students speak are the independent variables which are manipulated by us.  We use the experimental method to observe the dependent variables, the grade of quiz of two groups. We hypothesized that students who are natural English speakers would have better grade than the non-natural English speakers on the quiz.

Assume the hypothesis is true; the college should be benefit from this research. Through the research, the college should know the potential factor that affects student’s final grades and academic success. Base on the result of this search, the college can make a plan to adjust the capacity of the academic learn center or other English program.

The challenge we may be faced in the experiment should be the veracity of experimental data. Because the experiment require the participated students pay the attention during the lecture. Students who are not interested in the lecture may not pay more attention during the lecture. Those students may get the lower grade on the quiz. However, the grade of these students may be the confounding variables that affect be the veracity of experimental data.

Hello

Hello, everyone! I am Jie Geng (just call me Jason). This is my  second semester at Baruch, but I am Junior. My major is International Business. I were born in China. I came to the U.S. 3 years ago. Before our psychology class, the ENG2150(English writing II class)has used this blog frequently. However, I switch that class to the ENG 2150T (because English is my second language )before they started the first blog. so this is my first post.

I transferred from Queensborough Community College at Spring 2011. By the way, Baruch is my fifth college I has enrolled. My first college is also a community college in China , then I transferred to Nankai University,  one of the most famous  4-year colleges in China. Unfortunately, I was not graduated since I came to the U.S.. The Third college is Queens college. I had learned language in there for 1 year. then I try to apply the Baruch。But unfortunately again, my application is too late to be accepted by Baruch. I did not  want to waste my time again, so I accepted the Queensborough’s offer. I had stayed there for one and half year.  Fortunately,  I can attend the fun psychology class with you guys today.

I like the soccer, tennis and swimming, even though I am too fat to play those things.  I like the writing, but not in English. I post my Chinese blog daily 4 years ago. however, I have no time to do it right now.

I like writing because I am shy man. I like to share my experiences, my stories, and any else by using my word. I was born in the city that is one of the best cities in China, and  I went to the one of the poorest  counties to attended the high school when I was 16 years old. I came to the U.S. when I was 22 year old(it is too old to learn writing in English). Therefore, if you guys interest in China and Chinese culture, or you guys want to learn Chinese (I get 2 As in my Chinese class at Queensborough, and one is honor program), I will gladly  help you guys.

I had learned International Business for 4 years, it is  the reason I choose IB as my major. the second reason is a lot of my friends and classmates are doing international business. some of them are employer in the world best freight forward company, some of them own company in China. It is a big deal and social net for doing international business. if you guys are in the international business major,or you are interest in,  I will gladly be a friend with you.

Of course, I am glad to be friend with everyone. This is about myself.

Everybody have a nice Weekend!!!

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? >Actually, I have the same problem as the writer has. The overwhelming stresses come from working and schooling made the writer to feel himself/herself extremely anxious. Even thought she/he is practicing the meditation, she/ he can not empty her/his thought. The tension life make her/him get back the normal state from meditation practice. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? >During the meditation, sympathetic nervous system, the amygdala, and the prefontral cortex may be effected. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? >Did you think the meditation is the effective way to solve your anxiety? and did you think you can finally empty your mind during the meditation and get the deep relax after the persistent practice? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yes, I will. Because I have the same problem to face, I often anxiety because of the tension life, the overwhelming work, and the deep stress."

"I agreed with the author. Dad memories is important for individual as same as good one. In my opinion, good memories---such as the happy time about childhood, the prize you won in high school, or the first dean's honor list you got in college---should be a award from the past life. However, without the bad memories, nothing can mean good. The bad memories---such as the girls you break up with, the defeats in your past life, and the courses you failed---is also the wealth for individual experience. Those girls, defeats, and fails had taught you a lot. I will not be upset, even thought my longtime friend does not remember me since he/she has experience retrograde amnesia. I will be happy to being the only one person who will trust during the recovery process. At first, I will bring some group photo which was made in the special events for us. The old group photo is the best evidence for our long time relationship. After we "re-build" our relationship, I will bring he/she go to several place where is meaningful for recalling the past time, either happy time or flight time. I am not sure that will be helpful for his/her recovery, but I think it is much enough to remember who he/she is, who I am, and what relationship we had before accident."
