Better Learning/Grades

What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design?

  • Will a student earn better grades by putting all their focus on listening to what the professor is saying, or by splitting that attention between what the professor says and writing down notes?

What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate?

  • I would like to observe the concept of focus/attention and how beneficial it would be to fully focus on a lecture rather than splitting the attention between listening AND writing.

What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc)

  • The best design would be correlational to see what kind of effect one variable has on the other.

What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)

  • I would survey students who take notes and those that don’t. Once grades are received, I will see if there is any connection between variables.

If applicable, what would you put as your independent and dependent variables?

  • The dependent variable is the grade received by the student and the independent variable is whether or not the student was taking notes or not.

Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find.

  • Splitting focus on writing notes while listening is beneficial and will lead to better grades.

What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it?

  • Students will gain from it because they will see the benefits of taking notes.

Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?

I think the main challenge is the fact that students may not want to provide their actual grade if it is too low out of embarrassment or fear of being judged. The best solution of course is to ensure anonymity.

Hello

My name is Milton Aguirre, I was born in Ecuador but came to the United States as a baby and have been living here since.  I am a transfer student from LaGuardia Community College and I’m currently a Junior.  I have an associates in Computer Technology and I’m planning on majoring in Computer Information Systems. I love technology and I guess I can be considered a computer/tech geek.  I’m the type that always has to have the newest technology out there, newest cell phones (going to jump on that iphone5 when it comes out), newest computers, newest game systems.. etc.

While Psychology is not my intended major, I do find it very interesting, and is actually one of the most interesting classes I have taken at Baruch to date. I can really see myself getting into the field of psychology , however my passion for technology and computers is just greater.

As for hobbies, I love music (all types), dancing, computers, video games, movies(especially comedies and scary movies), travelling, and exploring nature in general.

Below are links that I frequent, and I guess in a way they say something about me..

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? On a physiological level I believe that the tension that had been building up in her body as a result of stress was being relieved. The meditation allowed her to relax her body and reduce her anxiety levels and improve her mood. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? I believe that the tingling sensation along the back shows that the spinal cord was affected by the meditation. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? After having seen the results, and concluded that the meditation was beneficial, do you see yourself meditating routinely? Do you feel that the results will improve with more practice? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I have always been interested in meditation but have never really attempted it on my own. After reading this, I am more interested and the details of the experience that Jenna wrote gave me a good idea of what to expect and how to do the same meditation exercise with success."

"This is definately interesting. As I have asked myself if it is better to study in the morning or at night. From personal experience I find it much easier to study at night, I guess it is because there are less distractions and I find that I tend to remember more of what I study."

"Hey Carolina, I'm also from Ecuador like Jaime. There's actually a lot of ecuadorians attending Baruch now. You two should visit the Ecuadorian Club during club hours. I used to work in Fresh Meadows also."

"Hi Kiara, I have to agree with you the diversity here at Baruch is great. I recommend you join a club it's a great way to network, make friends and of course have fun. I myself am a member of the Ecuadorian Club, but there's lots of other latin clubs. I've noticed that there's a lot of Dominicans @ Baruch, perhaps there's a Dominican club? (if there is I want in.. love bachata ;)"
