Car, DSI, ipod, ball, and computer vs. barbie, dress, ice-cream, book, and shoe!

  • What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design?

Do the elementary boys think differently than elementary girls?

  • What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate?

I observed if boys going to elementary school think differently than the girls going to elementary school.

  • What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, Correlational, etc)

My research work is  best described as experimental.

  • What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)

Naturalistic observation is the best suit of the experiment.

  • If applicable, what would you put as your independent and dependent variables?

N/A

  • Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find.

Elementary boys think differently than elementary girls.

  • What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it?

There is not much benefit of this study other than the fact that I, as a researcher, had my question answered.

  • Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?

For this experiment I randomly selected 5 girls and 5 boys at a park. All of them go to elementary school. I gave each of them a sheet of paper with the letters A-Z but the letters were not in order. Then I told them to make 5 words using the letters. The words that most frequently appeared in boys list were car, DSI, ipod, ball, and computer while the words from girl’s list were Barbie, dress, ice-cream, book, and shoe.

There was not much challenge except for the fact that I had to talk to parents before I started the conversations with each child to make sure that I don’t get in trouble for interacting with the children. It was less difficult than I thought it would be because the kids were highly co-operative. Since I did the experiment in a natural setting I think I got the best result as kids just wrote me whatever they had in their minds.

Hellooo!!!

I’m starting with  a big hellooooo to everybody here!

Ahh..I’m little too excited to write my first post for Baruch blog. So lets introduce myself! You can see my entire name with this post but I prefer to be called Sam. Yes, that’s because I don’t want you to ruin my name while pronouncing!

Now a bit more about me…I was born and raised in Bangladesh and came here at the end of 2006. I did my high school here and finally came to Baruch in 2010 and it’s my third semester here. It feels great to be Baruchian not because it looks gorgeous but because of the diversity, quality of education, and the faculty.

Shopping and sleeping are some stuffs that I enjoy doing. Okay, this does not sound productive enough. I love to read literature, do photography, and work for social welfare organizations. I would also consider myself as a community activist.

And here is the frustrating part, one thing I always run out is time. Wish days were 48 hours instead of 24! 🙁

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? During the meditation, the author was able to relax. The relaxation led her to calm and soothing mind. When the mind is calm stress, tension, and problem stay away. Therefore, the author was able to get rid of her anxiety of school work and focus more on the moment. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? The author’s left frontal cortex may show an increased activity. This could be figured out by an EEG. The activity in the sympathetic nervous system might be decreased and the activity in the parasympathetic nervous system might be increased. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Do you think yoga would be beneficial to anybody? Or the benefit will vary depending on the person? Are you impressed enough to practice yoga every day? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yoga is something that I’m passionate for. But unfortunately, my daily schedule doesn’t allow me enough time to practice this amazing activity. However, I plan to start yoga sessions soon and I would love to try what the author did."

"I completely agree with the your third paragraph. After reading you first two points, I was thinking of the issues that you have mentioned in the last paragraph. I have some awful memories in my life. During each of the incidents, my first concern was survival. After things got little better, I just wanted to forget them and eventually, I was able to. I find it amazing that all the disastrous memories are gone now. I can somewhat recall them but that doesn't bring me any pain. Its very true that I have learned several lessons through each of them. To talk about happiness, I actually accept what comes on my way. Although bad incidents make me pretty sad, happy moments don't bring me much excitement. They just leave me with a sense of content. Good or bad, however the experience is I think each of them has contributed to shape who I am today. Therefore, I welcome any experience that I encounter."
