Research – Autism Spectrum

1. What area of interest/research question do you wish to explore through a research study design?

How children diagnosed with an autism spectrum can overcome the situation.

2. What variables or concepts are you looking to observe and/or manipulate?

The therapies and how their parents face the situation

3.What type of design would best suit your research question? (Experimental, correlational, etc)

Experimental Studies

4. What research method would you use to conduct your experiment? (Survey, case study, naturalistic observation, lab experiment, etc.)

Naturalistic observation would be the best type of design.

5. If applicable, what would you put as your independent and dependent variables?

The independent variable would be the therapies children receive (which one is the best), the way their parents treat them and the dependent variable would be the result of these therapies or how their parents helped them to improve their situation.

6. Give a hypothesis about what you think you might find

Children could overcome the situation and socialize, focus, keep a conversation. Also children receiving therapies might stress because of their disability to express themselves. Parents may not follow the orders of the therapist because they feel bad or sad about the situation that they faced for their children.

7. What might be the benefits and implications of this study? In other words, who would gain from it?

Children and parents would benefit a lot. They are improving their lives. The most important thing is that children could overcome their situation.

8. Please reflect on the process of designing this experiment. What were the challenges you faced? Was this more/less difficult than you expected? How?

It was more difficult than I expected because to design an experiment is not as easy as it seems.

hola

Hello everyone,

My name is Ingrid Diaz. I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia.  I am living in New York since 2005. I am a returning student and this would be my second year at Baruch. This class is my favorite class. In Fall 2010 I took this class with professor Sitt, but I had to drop it. So, this year I decided to retake the class and obviously with professor Sitt.

I have an Associates in Applied Science in International Business from LaGuardia Community College. My major is International Business and I am planning to minor in Psychology. My hobbies are go to the cinema, read and listen Salsa music, specifically to Marc Anthony.  I would like to share with you my favorite song .

Enjoy it!!!

"1. After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? Navjot focused in relaxing and avoinding the distractions like thoughts that were blocked and different sensations that were available in that moment. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? In the left frontal cortex there is a increase in EEG activity. Meditation reduce activity in the sympathetic nervous system and increasing in the parasympathetic nervous system. Also, the amygdala and the prefontral cortex are involved. 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? The Guided Meditation by Ajahn Sundara is better that Yoga? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? Yes, I think this would be very interesting because Navjot describes this technique very effective and sometimes I need some way to relax."

"1. Well, I agree with John. He needs to spend time with his parents and family, they know John better than anyone else. 2. If he does not remember me I would feel frustated. 3. For me the most effective way to help him or anyone else to retrieve his memory would be showing him pictures, videos, and I would introduce him to everyone we knew. I would take him all places we visit or places we like the most. 4. I think that this would be a general rule to help some friend to retrieve his memory. Encoding: I would show him pictures , a lot pictures. Consolidation: I would review the pictures one by one trying to explain him what happened when we took that picture. Retrieval Techniques: it is possible that he remembers some of the memories he lost when he see the pictures."

"1. Well, I think that Barry is right when he says he would turn all of those who know him best, family, close friends, even past teachers, and professors, etc. Imagining that I am a longtime friend I would help him remembering all of things that are importnat for him. 2. If he doesn't remember me I would feel very sad. Usually we never thought that something like memory loss could happen to someone close to us, so I would help my friend to retrieve his memory. 3. Helping him reconstruct his memory I would show him pictures, videos, I would introduce him to everyone we knew. I would take him all places we visit or places we like the most. 4. Encoding: I would show him pictures , a lot pictures. Consolidation: I would review the pictures one by one trying to explain him what happened when we took that picture.
