Research Study Design

This is a study to find out how students who are taking exams are influenced by certain disruptions. In this case, I am interest in learning whether students would try to finish their exams faster than they normally would, when they see other students already finished and leaving.

This is a controlled experiment. There will be two separate groups of students to participate. In the experimental group, some students will be told to leave early.  However, there won’t be any disruptions in the control group.

Questions to ask

Would unsuspecting students in the experimental group try to rush and finish their job faster than they would have? Would students in the control group take longer to finish their exams than experimental group?

Hypothesis

Students in the experimental group are more likely to finish their exams faster than those in the control group. They would feel competitive and try to show that they are no less smart than the others, even though such action might serve in their disadvantage by lowering their exam points.

Independent Variable: Students who were set up to leave the exam early

Dependent Variable: Amount of time spent by students completing their exams

Professors and students would benefit from the results of this study. It would be beneficial for both groups to know that exam grades are not always reflective of true knowledge students possess. It is a further proof that there are number of factors that influence students to grade poorly despite successful preparation.

Hello!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Amaraa. This is my first semester as a transfer student at Baruch College! I am from Mongolia, which may not sound so familiar for a lot of people. It is a small country sandwiched between the two giants: Russia and China. But it is an independent country, which is an important fact to point out. Psychology is not my intended major but I have to say that, this is my favorite course by far. I am sure everyone will agree with me!

Besides studying Computer Information Systems at Baruch College, I love to learn about other cultures and languages. My native language is Mongolian, which is very unique and there is nothing like it. I can also speak Spanish and Japanese. I have traveled to Guatemala, El Salvador and Ecuador last year. There is nothing like exploring the other side of the world and getting familiar with different cultures and customs. My goal is always to avoid usual tourist traps and get oneself immersed with local people and communities as much as possible while traveling.

I am extremely content with my decision to come to Baruch College. It has been a great experience so far. New York City provides an ideal environment for any one who loves to explore. You turn around every little block in this city and you discover so much history and stories behind them! For those, who are international students, i say, take advantage of every single opportunity Baruch College has to offer and enjoy!

I wish good luck to everyone! Keep learning!

"After reading the reflection writer’s description, what do you think was happening to them during the meditation on a physiological level? I think the writer was pretty relaxed and he was able to concentrate on his meditation. He said he would have fallen asleep if the meditation continued little longer so that shows how relaxed he was. 2. Based on your readings throughout the semester, what areas of their central and peripheral nervous systems may have been effected during the meditation? frontal lobe, autonomic nervous system 3. What questions do you have for the writer about their experience? Do you think you would like to practice meditation regularly after what you have experienced during this exercise? 4. Based on the description provided, would you be open to trying the same meditation exercise? I definitely want to try meditation. in fact i have been looking for a place. i was recommended to go to the foundation of art of living."

"1. What is your reaction to the choices made by the author of this Reflection in terms of which memories they chose to keep and which memories they are discarding? I think it is really important to try to remember all the memories whether it is good or not so good. There might be some connections between different memories intertwined together. If you had some sad memories, and try to repress it then it is same as trying to repress who you are. I think all your memories, good or bad, make you who you are. 2. How would you feel if this friend did not remember you (imagining that you are their longtime friend)? That would be really sad but at the same time that is what happens, when one has a retrograde amnesia. Such facts would be difficult to face but it is for the best to accept it and try to cope with the situation. 3.What role might you play in helping them reconstruct their memory? I think as a close friend it is really important to help him/her in her process of recovery. After all, most social activities and memories involved are related to one's friends, especially close friends. Therefore it is crucial for close friends to get involved in this process. 4. Based on what you’ve learned in class and through your readings, what memory encoding, consolidation, and retrieval techniques might you use or teach to help this person recover and reintegrate their memories? I think it is important to train the brain little by little through all the stages of memory forming. It would be useful to repeat all the past memories until it is remembered."

"I wish I could ever commit myself to running a marathon! That is really awesome! And I admire that you are working hard to achieve your goal! I think it is very important for one to have specific goal like yours. Good Luck!"
