Intro Guided Meditation

IIA. First, take note of the moods you’ve experienced.

Out of the feelings listed on the chart, I’d say I am confused, sad, overwhelmed, and a bit lonely today.

B. Assess your overall level of anxiety on a scale of 1 to 10.

I am not anxious about the meditation, but I guess worried about my own issues; worried about all the due dates in school, maintaining my performance at work, and since I just got out of a relationship, dealing with all the thoughts going through my mind as of now. I’d say my anxiety level would be a 6.

C. Assess the level of physical tension in your body- where do you notice the tension? Try rating your overall tension on a scale of 1 to 10.

Between balancing work, school, and my own personal issues, I’ve been in desperate need of a massage. I’d say my tension would be an 8; mainly on my shoulders and back.

III. After you have finished your meditation, re-asses your state of mind and body.

A. Reassess your mood on the chart.

My feelings now aren’t exactly on the chart, but I’m feeling tired, sleepy (as usual), and ambivalent.

B. Reassess your level of anxiety from 1 to 10.

I am still worrying about all the pressures in life, so I’d say about a 5 now.

C. Reassess your level of physical tension and rate it from 1 to 10.

To be honest, I still feel the tension in my shoulders, so I’d give this category an 8.

IV. Describe the experience– What type of meditation did you choose? Describe what was going on in your mind and your body, what kind of thoughts and sensations did you experience during the meditation? Were there any challenging or frustrating aspects of the experience, and if so, what were they? Would you try this again in the future? Why or why not?

For my meditation, I chose “Intro Guided Meditation” by Ajahn Sundara (19:34) because I never really meditated before so I thought this introduction would be a good start. It started off with a voice instructing me of how to position myself and how to relax, I followed as instructed. I think the purpose of meditation is to release your mind and relax, but I was in a conscious state of mind the whole time. I was very aware of every little detail around me, such as my dog’s breathing or the refrigerator opening. I could not really “let myself go” in a sense that as the meditation began, I tried to be aware of everything the instructor said. I kept my ears open the whole time, even during the silence just in case I’d miss an important step. Throughout the whole process, I guess the most frustrating was the thought of “when is this going to end?” This thought ran through my mind countless times. The silence was a challenge for me, I hate being alone and I hate the thought of it, and even when I knew this was a meditation, it was hard for me to let go of this notion.

I know meditation is a good way to clear one’s mind of troubles, so I’d definitely try this again in the future. But probably not now because there’s just too much going on in my head, and I am the type that wouldn’t stop worrying until I know things are over and the problems are gone. I’d probably take on Yoga in the future though, I think it’s a great way to relax and exercise both the mind and body at the same time. I enjoy listening to audios with cheesy sounds of the waves of the ocean and rainfall. This was what I expected to hear in this meditation process, but I guess silence is another way for one to reflect on themselves.

H.E.L.L.O. :D

So I guess, hello everyone! My name is Alice and I’m a freshmen at Baruch. Made in New York, raised in new york, and have been living here all my life. Besides school, I currently work 2 jobs to afford living in this hectic city. I have a big fat dog called Jibi Booboo Zeng, where the first part of her name roughly translates to chicken thigh. She’s a female pit bull who just turned 2, and she has been a big part of my life ever since I got her.
I like cows, photography, and food (mostly desserts). I don’t have much hobbies, nor do i do much besides taking pictures and eat. I do go biking or walking the bridge sometimes when I feel stressed — there’s just something about the the long walk or ride that soothes my mind. I am also obsessed with Starbucks, don’t think I could ever get enough of that caffeine.
My family owns a farm, yes, a farm, in New Jersey. Partially for a living, partially just because they like it. Every once in a while, it’s nice to take a break from technology, from society, and just relax in nature. It’s a very calm environment and nice for a short vacation. We have a lake there with a small boat or canoe sort of thing, and never-ending field of crops.
I can’t think of anything else for now, but hello again everyone!

"I personally think that the students who are able to sleep for an average of 6-10 or more hours would actually do better on the test, and those who have an average sleep time of less than 6 would do worse. I don’t think that more is always worse; as you proposed, the more sleep one gets, the less time they have to study, but this has no evidence behind it. Just because one sleeps more than 10 hours does not mean they study any less than those who sleep on an average of 6-10 hours, for all we know, those students who sleep on an average of 6-10 hours may be partying all night which is the reason they are deprived of sleep. Similarly, those who sleep less than 6 hours may be studying the whole night. But I do think sleep deprivation affects one’s ability to perform well on an exam considering my personal experience. To improve the accuracy of this study, a more stable group of students would be needed to conduct this research. Some students may have jobs outside of school or have many more classes than others. Some may also be affected by personal issues of other problems that may cause stress and therefore becoming another varying factor of this experiment. Not everyone is the same, and if we all had a different amount of stress on our shoulders, of course we would respond differently. I don’t think there are much potential harmful impacts of this research design, but it does require a lot more consideration before conducting. An acceptable follow up study may be a questionnaire regarding all the varying aspects I listed above such as how many classes one is handling at the same time or the amount of time spent studying versus sleeping."

"Logically, I’d hypothesize that the students who were not under the influence would do better versus the students who were. Alcohol affects one’s ability to think and manage their own actions. I feel like it would just have a negative impact of their mind and thoughts. I don’t think alcohol is the best variable to conduct a research with, as for there are negative side effects and is harmful to the body. Everyone reacts to alcohol differently, and we do not know how each person will act. Some people may have a high alcohol tolerance, while others may not. If one passes out after one sip (considering this is the amount given to everyone), then automatically the results would be dramatically different. If the entire group of students had a low tolerance level, then obviously they would all not do as ideally on the exam as they’d like, but if you had a group of students who all had a high alcohol tolerance level, then again your results would be drastically different. I think as a substitute, energy drinks with high levels of caffeine or safe levels alcohol content would be a good consideration. Good research studies are tested over and over again. A good follow up study could be a questionnaire about each students confidence with alcohol and how they react to is, or how well they believe they are able to stay conscious and aware when they are under the influence."

"Because of the fact that you decided to keep both positive and negative memories, I really respect you for that. In most other posts I’ve read , the author simply wants to recover only the good memories and neglect all the bad; like you said, in a sense it’s just running away from who you are. I think the author will just be living in denial and even if you do recover all the good memories, it would just a be a part of who you are and not your true self. We all have a past and we learn from it. Without these experiences, both negative and positive, we would not have who we are today. Every single memory is what shapes who we are, and purposely forgetting a part of it is just an unsophisticated way of thinking. I hate the idea of imagining one day if a close friend leaves me, simply because I am afraid of being forgotten. If you lost your memory, I’d definitely be there to support you and remind you of everything that has happened, but at the same time devastated because our years of friendship all of a sudden has just been wiped away like chalk on a chalkboard. Looking back at who you are, or were, is an important step to knowing yourself, so I’d let you find yourself in pictures, videos, awards, etc. Of course it would be different looking at yourself as a third person, but I believe you will slowly find yourself through time."

"I think it's natural as a human to decide to choose all the good memories versus the negative ones, but I feel like it's from the negative memories that we learn to move on. If we were never heartbroken, how would we know what to expect of how to act in a new relationship? We learn from our mistakes, and I think this is an important step in our lives. Negative memories, obviously, may be unappealing, but they are not all for the worse. We can't run away from the situations we don't want to face forever, because eventually we will run into them again. Since you are choosing to remember all the good memories, I believe that you will recover your memory of remembering me if I were your longtime friend. But in any case if you didn’t, of course I’d be devastated. It’s so hard to find a person to be a true friend, and I’d do anything to help you recover tour memory. I could play the role of a mentor in helping you reconstruct your memory; I’d be along your side ready to answer any questions you have about the past. As you stated, looking back at pictures or old conversations would definitely be a great way of recovering your memory. In addition, I think being able to go back to meaningful places in the past or reproaching objects with sentimental value would be a great way as well. We’d be retracing your steps from the past in effort to help you remember even the littlest things."

"@smugannahi --- Another photography lover, hello :D I love taking pictures but even with my jobs, I haven't been able to save up enough to buy an actual nice camera. For now, I'm just using my iPhone, which is kinda busted already, and one of those Instax cameras that prints films instantly. My parent's farm mainly grows crops and veges, yours sound more like what I wanted in the first place! I'd rather be able to take a stroll down my farm and eat some peaches here, pluck some grapes there. @sheron-elliott --- 3 jobs?! Workaholic much? Haha, I actually wanted to find a third job during summer since my schedule already killed any chance of me going on vacation, but it was really hard to find a job where the hours didn't conflict. I love Zara btw! I've always wanted to apply to a clothing store like Urban Outfitters (my favorite as well), but most places require 18+, and my birthday is in October :[ @serena-kuang --- I used to get Starbucks almost every morning back in high school since it was right around the subway when I got off, but now I'm lucky enough if I'm not late to class, I barely have time since the lines are always long in the morning. But since there is a Starbucks near my home, it's all good, have to grab something before I go home :] My first sense of accomplishment was when I became a Starbucks Gold Card member, it's like my most important card in my wallet. @valentina-barbero --- I am already deprived of sleep to the maximum extent, but school is a definite for me, and I need the money for school. The bills just keep on coming, and if I didn't have a job, I don't know how I'll be able to get through with everything. I hate the position I'm in right now, but I'm looking forward to the breaks! @stanislav-razzhivin --- Mostly crops and veges, hopefully soon we'll expand to an orchard as well! I'd like to pick some apples or strawberries :D @tanay-rudra --- In order to support life, 2 is a must! Work hard, play hard --- Spend what you earn and earn what you spend. I really hope the FAFSA kicks in soon, so I can finally have enough money to take a break. But even so, I guess it's not a bad thing to get more experience. @taratorn-sakdapitakkamol --- Trust me, it may look nice, but it is a hard transition getting used to a farm. The bugs, the mosquitoes, the random insects everywhere, sometimes nature is intimidating! I have no idea how much 8 shifts is, but sounds like a hassle. I definitely need the luck this semester! @yanwang-szeto --- I’m actually a horrible photographer, it's just the objects in the photos are captivating. Smell of mud and grass; very figurative, thank you! @jing-qi --- Mhmm, I do beast on picture when I'm at the farm; you see things you probably will never see in the city. And my dog may be a bit like a bum at times when she gets dirty from all the dirt, but I agree, she is quite cute ;) @yanting-jiang --- I've never saw the Broadway show, but I've seen the cartoon when I was younger. Did not get it at all. I've had a turtle before, one of those that you win from a fair, but it died not long after. I had a kitten in middle school, but we had to give it away in the end. Every once in a while, somehow we'd find stray kittens wandering on the streets and bring them home. Eventually we'd find someone to adopt them, but my home has been like a shelter. I cannot count how many we've taken care of. I like a lot of animals, but cows are my #1. They're amazing, all I can say. @frances-zhen --- #1: I AM JEALOUS YOU WENT TO BERMUDA. I spent my summer working, working, working; I am so desperate for time to go one a vacation. #2: My name is Alice, and since I've remember, people have been calling me Alice in Wonderland just because. I like the white choco mocha a lot too! But sometimes it's too sweet for me; my taste buds are dying from drinking all the black coffee. @artiom-fetesco --- If you mean leaving the US, then yes, ever single minute of my life. I don't hate New York, but there's so much out there in the world. I've thought about it, if I ever had enough money, I would travel around the world. I need a break and a vacation so badly, I just need money first! @milos-micunovic --- I like my farm a lot, but honestly I'm so dependent on technology, I really don't think I could live away from everything in the city. The storm was horrible, but we managed :D @helen-ho --- Yes, I'm baller. I have a farm. And a fat dog on that farm. And as for the photo editing, there's an app for that :D"

"Hi! Psychology is so far my favorite class of the semester too! I don't know, but I feel like being in a lecture hall actually gives me the experience of being in college. Even though there's like a million people, I like it more than my small classes. Your dog is cute! Originally I wanted a dog like yours that was furry and small, but my parents refused to get a dog that would shed fur all over the furniture so i ended up adopting a pit bull. Not that I'm complaining since she's now my best friend and I can't love her more than I already do! It was nice reading your introduction :]"
